Most Embarrassing Costume

My most embarrassing Halloween costume was when I was around four or five and my mother dressed me in my yellow footy pajamas, stuck some cotton on my rump, crafted some bunny ears, and painted whiskers on my face. I guess when you are a five year old boy you can pull off the cute little yellow bunny look ... barely.

What was the most embarrassing Halloween costume you had to endure?

My Dreams Have Come True

For the past few months several of my dreams have been coming true... or close to coming true. Unfortunately, by dreams have not been all that stellar. Let me give you a couple of examples.

A couple of months ago I had a dream that I left my backpack that holds my computer at the Panera in Muncie. When I realized that I had left it I called the store and asked if they had seen it; the worker on the phone said that they had. I asked, "Is there a computer in the bag?" And they said, "Uh... No." My dream jumped to me being at Panera and asking them if they had any surveillance video and they did. My dream ended with me looking for the person who stole my computer. [End dream] Several days latter I find myself at Panera with several of the other pastors from our church enjoying a meal. Following our meal I walked away from our table and was about to leave when I realized I left my computer and backpack at the table and nearly, unintentionally, forgot it.

Last week I had a very random dream that I was at our church speaking with a couple of our pastors in the new building, in a particular corner, about a very specific pipe in the floor and the possibility of putting a rest room in that corner some day. [End dream]. The very next day I was called to the new building by a sub contractor asking a specific question about that pipe, in that corner, with those two pastors present and we had a discussion about a future restroom in that spot.

I've had a couple of other very random things happen like that recently. And you know what I'm thinking? Why can't I dream about receiving an anonymous six figure check in the mail? Or maybe, loosing ten pounds / growing a foot taller / etc. etc.?

Crazy Love

I've just begun reading "Crazy Love" by Francis Chan and haven't gotten past the preface and am already underlining quotes. Here is one that I thought I'd share with you. Regarding the church and the world's perception...

"We need to stop giving people excuses not to believe in God. You've probably heard the expression "I believe in God, just not organized religion." I don't think people would say that if the church lived like we are called to live. The expression would change to "I can't deny what the church does, but I don't believe in their God." At least then they'd address their rejection of God rather than use the church as a scapegoat."

This book is going to be good... and challenging!

Non-Profit Fundraising

I read a great post today on Seth Godin's blog regarding fund-raising for Non-Profits. Here are just a few excerpts:

"Look around you at great leaders who you know or respect.  What do they spend their time doing?    They are infused with drive, passion, vision, commitment, and energy.  They walk through the world dissatisfied with the status quo.  They talk to anyone who will listen about the change they want to see the world.  And they build a team and an organization that is empowered to make that change.

How good is your idea?  How important is your cause?  Important enough that you’ve given up another life to lead this life.  You’ve given up another job, another steady paycheck, another bigger paycheck to do this all day long, every day, for years if not for decades, to make a change in the world and to right a wrong."...

"Convincing the most powerful, resource-rich people you know that allocating some of their capital to the issues you’re addressing matters.

You’re devoting your life, your spirit, your energy, your faith into making the vision you have of a better future into a reality.

So why are you so scared to ask people for money?  Why do you feel afraid to say: “This problem is so important and so urgent that it is worth your time and your money to fix it.  I’m devoting my whole life to fixing this problem.  I’m asking you to devote some of your resources to my life’s work too.” ...

"If your ideas and programs and people and vision are so great, shouldn’t people be willing to reach into their pockets and fund them?   If it’s worth spending your life doing this work, shouldn’t you or someone in your organization be able to convince someone else that the work is worth supporting?"...

"I’d rather be an evangelist, a storyteller, an educator, a translator, a table-pounder, a guy on his soap box, a woman with a megaphone, a candidate for change.  I want to talk to as many people as I can about my ideas – whether in person or in newsletters or on Facebook or Twitter or in the Economist or at the TED conference or at Davos – and capture their imagination about the change I hope to see in the world.

Don’t you?"

Great stuff! This is why I can stand in front of our congregation and challenge us to step up financially for the cause of the Gospel. It is because I literally believe that Jesus Christ is the answer to your problems and the problems of this world. Getting that message out locally and globally takes resources. I will do my part to tell the story, cast the vision, and lobby for transformational change. And we as a congregation will do our part to keep allocating our riches in the direction of the greatest change imaginable... the transformation of one life at a time through the power of Jesus Christ.

Sunday Night Mind Dump

  • Our one year anniversary of "Building to Bless... Another Generation" was fantastic. I loved seeing all of the children on stage at the start of service!
  • I've had the phrase, "The here and now affects the there and then." (1 Tim. 6:19) stuck in my head all week long... in fact I still hear it.
  • If you didn't stop by the temporary Higher Ground Coffee shop you missed out on their "Building to Bless" anniversary special - $1 for any drink of your choice.
  • If all goes well we will dedicate the new construction next Sunday!
  • A portion of our children's ministries met in their new rooms today. Word has it from the volunteers that the space is FANTASTIC.
  • My wife looked hot today.
  • I've gathered some firewood in anticipation of roasting smores this week.
  • Speaking of wood: The Sticks Conference is just around the corner (Nov. 11-12) and I can't wait to meet some fellow pastor's who are ministering in similar contexts.
  • November 8 and 9 I will preaching at a spiritual emphasis weekend (I don't know what else to call it) at my father's church near Indianapolis.
  • Our next sermon series is titled, "Why?". I have had numerous people over the last month ask me "why do bad things happen to good people", "why would God let me go through what I'm going through?" etc. I will do my best to answer those questions and more beginning next Sunday.
  • I should have taken a nap this afternoon. I have a feeling I will be paying for it tomorrow.
  • I am so tempted right now to make myself a latte - - or shall I have a scoop of ice cream?.... ... Okay I'll have both.

Missionary Marggy

This was one of those weeks where I didn't get much of what I wanted to accomplish done at all. It seemed that there were a billion little things to attend to this week. It didn't help any that I didn't have the sermon completely done until today either. It also didn't help that our Pastor of Administration, Marggy Hensley, has been out of the office this week. Since Marggy came on staff she has picked up the oodles and oodles of details at the church, allowing me to give more time and attention to study and sermon prep.

Marggy is out of the office for a very good reason this week. She traveled back to Jamaica to spend some time in prayer and discernment about whether or not God is calling her to be a missionary with Christian Service International. You can read about it in her own words on her blog. There is part of me that is very excited for her potential call into active missions, and then there is the part of me (especially considering the week I've had) that would love for her to stay and perform her administrative magic at FFC. Marggy is a huge blessing to me and to our church, but more importantly I know she has been called to be a blessing to the Kingdom of God. Whether she is at FFC or with CSI on the mission field I know God will continue to be pleased with her heart to serve Him.

Just For Giggles

Tammy and I watched this video last night and I laughed for a good 10 minutes. Tammy is too Christ-like to laugh at someone's misfortune (I do think I saw a grin cross her face for a moment though); evidently I have a lot of growing up to do because this video made me laugh.

It really starts to get good about 2:25+ into it...

HT: Carlos.

Miniature Earth

When I see videos like the one below, or I travel outside of the U.S. I'm reminded of just how much God has blessed me (us). I think it is so important that we get the bird's eye view/the big picture especially at times like this when the downturn in the economy would goad us into bemoaning just how "poor" we think we are...

Intentional Generosity

This Sunday is our fourth and final week in our message series on being rich. (By the way FFC peeps, it is also our one year anniversary event for our Building to Bless... Another Generation stewardship campaign.)

Last Sunday I shared about the principle of tithing. Tithing teaches us a couple of things; #1 tithing teaches us to put God first. Most people don't put God first, they put themselves first, and give God the leftovers. God comes after all the bills are paid and after we have done our best to satisfy ourselves. We put ourselves first all week long and then Sunday rolls around and we reluctantly throw 10 bucks into the offering plate. Returning to God the first part of our income teaches us to prioritize our lives around Him and not the other way around. #2 tithing increases my faith in God. It takes faith to give to God first; it doesn't take any faith at all to throw our leftovers in God's direction, anyone can do that.

Being an intentional percentage giver is wise management of the resources that God has placed into our hands. We lean towards being intentional consumers and not intentional contributors.
We will scheme about how to get more, and buy more, and keep more, but rarely do we find folks who are scheming about how to give more and become increasingly generous.

I'm Voting For...

Those that know me know that I don't talk very often about politics. As a pastor I have to be very careful (publicly) not to endorse a candidate. I'm also very cautious outside of the pulpit as well, I have never even put a campaign sign in my lawn. Other than reposting a portion of the debate the other night, I've kept pretty silent about the election, but tonight I break that silence.

Here's my thoughts on the upcoming election:

According to the two party candidates - if the other is elected we are in deep doodoo. They have done a sufficient job of convincing me we are toast no matter who wins the election. :-)

Yep, I'm a little cynical.

It's Got To Be True

Did you know that the U.S. government is planning to track homeless people by implanting them with RFID chips? Or that Obama refuses to put is hand over his heart during the national anthem because he views the American flag as a symbol of oppression? And that the FCC wants to shut down all Christian programming? Yeah, it's got to be true I've received emails about it. Everyone knows that any email sent to you is true... right?

Wrong! Please for the love of all that is good in the world, check your facts before you forward an email. If you claim to be a Christian, then seeking, spreading, and telling the truth should be a basic principle. I do not send forwards (or even believe forwarded email) unless I can substantiate that the content is true. In order to check the validity of an email, or something else that you may have heard, a good place to begin is snopes.com and truthorfiction.com.

Now, be sure to send this blog post to 10 friends or God won't love you anymore.

Journal Entry June 15, 2006

In my last post I gave you a glimpse into a journal entry during a difficult time in my life. I thought I'd post just one more entry, this one from the next day, June 15, 2006.

"This morning my mind is going in a million different directions. It is difficult to focus. Hopefully as I continue to write this journal entry I will find that my thoughts become more focused. I wonder how leaders of large corporations or the President of the United States is able to stay focused on all that they have to do. Surely, their minds are swimming with details and upcoming responsibilities.

I think there is really no way to move a corporation, or even a government for that matter, without good leaders working beside you. The success of any movement or business is determined by the passion and ability of those within the movement or corporation.

The first Christians birthed at Pentecost had no clue about how to lead a church or even grow a church, what they had was passion and clarity. The Spirit provided the fuel and the passion that propelled them into the world. The commission of Christ gave them the clarity to move in a direction.

Without passion and clarity at Farmland Friends Church we will not move forward. We will stagnate and then die.

God I pray for passionate movers and shakers within our congregation; bring those with a white hot passion for you. Please don't let the momentum end with our emotions, let it be translated into a clear focus on the mission to bring people into your Kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ. May the same Spirit that fueled the early believers at Pentecost energize me to accomplish every task before me and may the mind of Christ give me clarity to only pursue those tasks that are necessary for the betterment of your Kingdom. Amen."

Journal Entry June 14, 2006

Back in June of 2006 I was the only full-time pastor on staff of our church of 400+. At the time there was a part time secretary, a bookkeeper, and a 1/4 time Senior Adult Pastor. It was a very challenging and stressful season of ministry for me. This morning I ran across a journal I was writing at the time to try to help me keep my sanity. Here is a peak into June 14, 2006...

"It's 8:14 a.m and I already feel like I am behind. There are 6 meetings with individuals/groups, not counting those that just pop into the office. The meetings will run from 9 a.m.well past 9:00 p.m. Being the only full-time pastor at the church is very stressful. I guess I will just have to take it one hour at a time and not sweat the next hour or the next issue.
I know that it is important that I focus my thoughts and energy on my calling, gifting, passions, and talents. I want to continually place time and energy into preaching but that time is getting crowded out.
When life is coming at you fast, it is hard to get your mind around the big picture. Maintaining focus in the minutia of minor details has to be a learned skill. I guess God is offering me plenty of opportunity to work on the skill of maintaining focus amid the mayhem.
God let me see the big picture. I don't want to miss the forest for the trees. Let me do Kingdom work among all the details. May each small, tedious, sometimes stressful task be done to bring you glory and to benefit your Kingdom. Help me today not to allow the stress to be exhibited in my life in an unhealthy manor. Amen."

Today I have a great team of staff and pastors that I get to work with and they make the burden of ministry so much lighter. Thank you Jill Cunningham, Jenny Lee, Jeff Pfohl, Marggy Hensley, James Pinkerton, Tonya Pinkerton, Debi Howell, and Brian Cline.

What They Really Mean

I'm not feeling particularly creative this evening so I thought I would share a blog post that resonated with me as a pastor. This comes from Perry Noble, pastor of NewSpring Church in South Carolina...

(WARNING…you will probably only like this post if you are a pastor or a staff member of a church!)

What They Say:  “I’m looking for a church that preaches the Word!”

What They Mean:  “I’m looking for a church that preaches MY view of the Word.  I think the BLANK translation should be used…I think BLANK should be talked about a lot while BLANK should be ignored.  And if you ever stop preaching my view of the Word I will leave and tell others that you don’t preach the Word!”

What They Say:  “Lot’s of people have been coming to me and saying they don’t like is…”

What They Mean:  “I basically only have three friends…and all of them think exactly like me.  The other night we were enjoying a time of self righteousness because, after all, we are right about everything…and were also slandering you (in the form of prayer requests) and thought it would be wise to approach you with our pet peeve.  We’ve actually talked to no one else about this but said “lots” because we wanted to validate our dysfunction.”

What They Say:  “I’m leaving the church.”

What They Mean:  “Beg me to stay.  If you will just ask me I will share with you several ways you can compromise God’s vision that He’s given you, thus becoming nothing more than a people pleasing pastor who is more interested in popularity than obedience.  If you don’t bow to my demands I will remind you that I tithe and that the church needs my money, reducing you to a mere preaching whore…one who is paid for a service for the pleasure of another person.”

What They Say:  “I want a church that is more focused on discipleship.”

What They Mean:  “I want a church where everyone knows me and how important I am!  I don’t want to reach people who are different from me, be it economic class or race or even musical preference.  I already know WAY more than I do…but I somehow equate spirituality with knowledge rather than application and I rather enjoy feeling intellectually superior to those who don’t know as much as me.”

What They Say:  “Don’t take this personally…but…”

What They Mean:  “I am about to lower the BOOM on you…but you can’t get angry because I told you not to take it personally.  Even though you have dedicated your life to this and pretty much invest every ounce of energy you have to this cause…and I think about it once or twice a week…you need to receive my attacks, even when they are personal…and you cannot retaliate because, remember, it’s not personal.”

OKAY, that was fun!  I typed it all with a smile.  Trust me…I’m not mad or frustrated with anyone…I just thought a pastor or two MIGHT get a smile out of this.  :-)

Happy Columbus Day... Again

What would Columbus Day be without an update from our annual Sorensen Columbus Day festivities? Last year I shared the details of this very moving and emotional national holiday? I thought I would update those new to changeisgood4u.com of our little tradition...

"Happy Columbus Day!!! I wait all year for this very special holiday and it has finally arrived. I don't know how you celebrate it in your home, but in our home I dress up as Christopher Columbus, fill the bathtub full of water – jump in and “sail” to the “new country” where I am greeted by my 2 "Indianprincesses". We then exchange gifts: I give them a necklace made of dandelion weeds in exchange for 30 pounds of gold. The festivities are concluded with the 3 of us singing a rousing chorus of “Oh Columbus Day” around a big spread of turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry relish, and a Dairy Queen ice cream cake.

Happy Columbus Day! If you will excuse me, I’
ve got to get changed into my outfit."

Failed Plans vs. Failed Vision

I think it is important that I continue to learn as a leader; being open to blind spots in my leadership and intentionally seeking out new information. This morning I was reading Andy Stanley's, "Visioneering" and he was writing about the difference between a plan and a vision. Andy wrote this, "It is easy to lose sight of the vision when your plans don't work out. Failed plans always have a backlash of negative emotion... In most cases those who are watching from the outside will find it impossible to distinguish between the plan and the vision. they see them as one and the same. The death of one is the death of the other... For that reason, when a plan fails, the vision must be recast." p. 157

As I read this simple reminder that a plan and a vision are not the same I realized that at times I lack the courage to enact a plan because of the assumption that if the plan (attempt) failed then the vision was a failure. I also have intuitively known that when others see a failed plan they begin to lose heart/focus when the plan falls flat and momentum is then lost.

Leadership takes courage; courage to potentially fail when attempting to attain the vision that God has laid on your heart. Failed plans are not the death of a vision... but failing to plan may be. Now, to the drawing board to create a plan that may or may not fail, but will take me one more step toward the vision.

Margin

I’m writing this blog post from the comfort of my “local” Starbucks. Sitting here I thought about what a difference 10 years of learning has done for me. There was a time when I first entered the ministry that I felt bad if people saw me between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. not in the office or sitting in some elderly person’s home visiting with them. I thought they might think I wasn’t working and I pushed myself to constantly work. The result was a lack of margin in my time and more stress built up within me.  Fortunately, I don’t let people’s thoughts or opinions control my life as much anymore. I’ve learned that the pastorate is not a 9-5, 5 days a week, kind of job; I have to find margin where I can get it. If I over extend myself and I have no margin then when a need/crisis occurs my stress level reaches an unhealthy level. When I have margin in my time it allows me to respond to ministry needs/crisis when they occur in a healthy manner.

Those not in professional ministry need to find margin where they can get it as well. If we have no space in our time, then when the opportunity to minister to others comes along or when a crisis occurs we don’t have the emotional ability to respond properly. How about carving some time out and giving yourself some margin? Read a few less blogs today, watch one less TV show each night this week, watch one less sporting event, say “no” to requests for your time that don’t bring you joy and bless others, etc. When you give yourself margin you will find that you are much more productive at what God has called you to do and more able to respond to the needs of others around you.

Catalyst Backstage

I'm so bummed I can't make it to Catalyst this year. Catalyst is a conference for church leaders and it has to be the best conference experience I've ever had; wish I could be there right now. Fortunately, I can still get in on some of the action. For all my fellow Catalyst lovin' peeps out there check out what Anne Jackson gets to do this year with "Catalyst Backstage" ...

You Saw It Here First

Upstairs youth room - drywall going up...

One of the 2-3 year old rooms with a fresh coat of paint...

4 year olds - kindergarten room; a little cluttered with building supplies, but you get the idea...

Hallway that runs along the parking lot with some paint on the walls...

Hallway leading to what will be the check-in kiosk for the nursery - kindergarten rooms.

We are getting much closer! Our "Building to Bless... Another Generation" one year anniversary will be on October 26th. It's hard to believe we launched this dream a year ago now.

I See Rich People

Today I had the privilege of telling my congregation that they are all rich. I don't think they believed me at first so I had to spell it out a little bit. The median income for families in Randolph County, Indiana in 2004 was $37,877. That makes us the top 3.8% richest people in the world! Believe it or not, I live around a lot of people that are among the richest in the world. Anyone who makes over $47,500 is in the top 1% of the wealthiest people alive.

3.8 billion people in this world live on less than $2 per day. Less than 3% of the world population owns a car. Very few can afford someone to cook and serve them meals (restaurants). We are the abnormality here in the west. We are blessed with more than we need - we are rich!

I've blogged about this before. We are blessed in this nation and we miss it so often because we don't FEEL rich, because we know some folks who have more than us. We think that if we could just get MORE than we would feel rich. However, when we do get more we find that there is someone who still has more than us so we don't feel rich.

Putting our wealth in perspective as compared to the rest of the world helps me not to stress over something like the "financial crisis" that America finds itself in. Matthew 6:19-34 is a great reminder not to sweat it too.

Chili Cook-Off

Interested in tasting some of Tammy's homemade chili? Tomorrow (Saturday Oct. 4), beginning at 11:30 AM, in the streets of Historic Farmland USA we will be competing in the "Chili Cook-Off". The FFC pastors are officially entering this contest and several of the pastors will be there to greet you and dish up some yummy chili. (I may be biased, but I think Tammy makes great chili.) We would love to see you downtown tomorrow.

You can read more about the cook-off HERE. There is a fee to sample the various chili's that will be downtown.
