7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Habit #5 from Stephen R. Covey's "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"

"Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood. Covey warns that giving out advice before having empathetically understood a person and their situation will likely result in rejection of that advice. Thoroughly reading out your own autobiography will decrease the chance of establishing a working communication." taken from Wikipedia.

I learned this little tip very early on from my father who is a pastor. When people come to visit me for counseling, or I'm visiting with them in a hospital, or maybe beside a casket at a funeral home they aren't interested in hearing my story. They want to tell me theirs; and I should welcome that.

I went to a funeral a few weeks ago where the minister spoke more about his life during the message than the life of the deceased or the life of Christ. No one was interested in his personal stories, they weren't even comforting or related to anything else.

Personal stories and sharing myself with others is important and has its place, but effective ministry takes place when others come first.

7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Habit #4 from Stephen R. Covey's "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"

"Think Win/Win describes an attitude whereby mutually beneficial solutions are sought that satisfy the needs of oneself, or, in the case of a conflict, both parties involved." taken from Wikipedia.

Here's a win/win. You purchase my slightly-used-near-functioning iPod for 75 bucks. I get $75 and you get... uh...umm... slightly-used-near-functioning iPod. There. See. Win/Win. ;-)

Don't Mess With Your IPod

I started having problems with my iPod yesterday - my click wheel started acting very sporadic. It wouldn't work at all unless I was plugged into my computer via the USB cable. I did everything I could to fix it, resets, downloads, uploads, sideloads, prayer, anointing oil (just kidding about the oil), nothing worked. So this afternoon I thought to myself, "Hey why not crack it open and unplug the battery or jostle with the click wheel internally a little bit? What could it hurt?" So that's what I did.

This is the inside of an iPod...

Looking good... all was going well... until...

This itsy bitsy teeny tiny little part snapped off of where the battery plugs in... OOPS.

Anyone want to buy an 80 GB iPod?

Just Wondering

Do you ever feel really self conscious when you walk into a clothing store and you are wearing a full outfit from that store. For some reason I feel really nerdy walking into Old Navy wearing a shirt that says, "Old Navy". The other day we were in American Eagle and I had on a shirt that said "American Eagle" and my shorts said "American Eagle" and I felt weird. I have this irrational thought that people are thinking, "Does he shop anywhere else? Is he stalking this store? What a nerd."

I get the same way when I walk into Target and I'm wearing red. I think, "Oh no, someone's going to think I work here, why couldn't I have worn blue?"

Do you ever get weirded-out wearing a full outfit from the store you are shopping in? It could just be me... I was just wondering.

7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Habit #3 from Stephen R. Covey's "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"

"Put First Things First. Here, Covey describes a framework for prioritizing work that is aimed at short-term goals, at the expense of tasks that appear not to be urgent, but are in fact very important. Delegation is presented as an important part of time management. Successful delegation, according to Covey, focuses on results and benchmarks that are to be agreed upon in advance, rather than prescribed as detailed work plans." taken from Wikipedia.

This is a little off topic from Covey's Habit #3; but I don't care, It's my blog. -

I'm a list maker. Every morning when I get to my desk (following my devotions) I create a list of the tasks that need to get done for the day. I get such a thrill crossing out the items on my to-do list. One thing I learned about the ministry very early on was that my job is never ever done. You get one sermon done and you've got to be preparing the next one, you manage one crisis and the next one pops up, you make contact with one person and the next person is waiting in the wings, etc. For someone who likes to see progress and sense a feeling of accomplishment the transition into ministry was challenging because there was never a conclusion... until I started making my little lists.

I've also learned that with my temperament I can't look too far into the future at my schedule, or become too obsessed with everything that I've done in the past. I tend to get overwhelmed when I look at a large list of meetings, deadlines, speaking engagements, etc. I also start to feel exhausted if I consider how busy I've been. So I've learned to take it one day at a time, make my little lists, and look for the opportunities that God gives daily for me to minister.

7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Habit #2 from Stephen R. Covey's "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"

"Begin with the End In Mind. This chapter is about setting long-term goals based on "true north" principles. Covey recommends formulating a "personal vision statement" to document one's perception of one's own vision in life... He also deals with organizational vision statements, which he claims to be more effective if developed and supported by all members of an organization rather than prescribed." taken from Wikipedia.

It's been a while since I sat down and formulated a vision statement. I can remember working through my vision with Tammy back in late 2000/ early 2001. We had everything written out and spelled out on paper. Everything that was on that paper had to do with ministry and the type of ministry that we felt God calling us to. Not too long after crafting that vision God brought us to FFC. Much of what was on that paper is now occurring: people coming to Christ, changed lives, growing congregation, a church that is passionate and alive, a church family who truly loves one another, etc.

I think its time to go back to God and specifically seek some more personal vision, dream big, and put pen to paper. How about you? What is in your personal vision?

Ice Skates

Does anyone around "P- Town" or Farmland have a pair of adult ice skates I can borrow for Sunday morning's message? If so leave me a comment and hook a brother up.

Wouldn't that be cool if you walked into church this Sunday and I had created an ice rink! The church is round - it would work out perfect. Cowboy props one week - ice skating rink the next.

7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Habit #1 from Stephen R. Covey's "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"

"Be Proactive. Here, Covey emphasizes the original sense of the term "proactive" as coined by Victor Frankl. You can either be proactive or reactive when it comes to how you respond to certain things. When you are reactive, you blame other people and circumstances for obstacles or problems. Being proactive means taking responsibility for every aspect of your life. Initiative and taking action will then follow." taken from Wikipedia.

I was listening to a message from Dave Ramsey today and he referred to "The 7 Habits..." and being proactive with our finances rather than reactive. Being proactive is such a great habit to maintain, not just with our finances but in every aspect of our life. Where are you at right now... proactive or reactive?

Free Meal

Interested in a free meal? Then I would suggest you make your way to the 10:30 worship service this Sunday. In staff meeting we hammered out an idea that fits with the sermon this Sunday and lets just say some folks are going to be very happy they made their way to church and hadn't made any plans for lunch directly after the 10:30 service.

Happy Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day! Thank you vets, and current soldiers, for protecting our liberties. A special thank you to my grandfather, Thorvald Sorensen, who was drafted into the second World War on August 1, 1942.

My grandfather lives in Plymouth, Iowa and writes often about his childhood, days in the military, and his life today.

Sunday Night Wrap Up

Sunday Night Thoughts

  • Our Gunslinger series is officially over now. I've got to say that this was a challenging series to preach.
  • I sense a lot of "push back" when I talk about: dying to self, risking our lives for the love of God and for the love of others, and becoming missionaries.
  • It was fun watching all of the country/western fans get into the theming of this series.
  • There's enough hay on the stage at church to choke a goat - this ought to be a lot of fun to clean up! Time to break out the shop vac or to bring in a horse... which creates other clean up issues.
  • Our next series will be on the book of Philippians.
  • I'm looking forward to sharing the pulpit in this next series with Pastor Jeff and Ryan McAllister. The weeks that I'm sharing the pulpit will give me the opportunity to plan future sermon series.
  • It was great having our little cook-out fellowship meal after church today. It was very casual, but it gave folks that didn't have other plans an opportunity to hang out with one another.
  • I'm looking forward to the day off tomorrow. We are planning on having friends over tomorrow for a little cook-out and possibly a little Mario Kart competition (our own Indy 500) :-)
  • Happy Memorial weekend to you all.

Preacher's Block

I'm experiencing "preacher's block"; you've heard of "writers block", this is similar. I'm currently working on some messages for our next series, beginning in June, from the book of Philippians. I've got the first sermon written but I am struggling with sermon #2 (Philippians 1:12-30).

There are times when I hit a period of time where it is difficult to put the sermon together. I'm not far from God; my devotions are going well, I sense a closeness in my relationship with the Lord, but for some reason the sermon prep just doesn't "click". Fortunately, I plan my messages far enough in advance that I normally am not sweating it come Saturday night before the sermon.

I think in this particular case I just need some uninterrupted time to put the message together. What do you do when you hit a "writers/bloggers/preacher's block"?

Sad Day

Many of you have already learned of Steven Curtis Chapman's 5 year old adopted daughter dying yesterday in a very tragic accident. Here is an article to read the details.

This just breaks my heart; I can't help but get emotional when I think about this. If you have words of encouragement or a prayer for the family you can post it HERE.

Gunslingers Week 3 Thoughts

This Sunday is our 3rd and final week in our series "Gunslingers". This Sunday we will talk about the mission of the "Gunslinger".

Here is a brief recap of what we have learned so far: The Bible makes it clear that we are not on this earth for our own selfish pleasure, we are here to bring God glory in all the different spheres of our life. He becomes our primary focus; in order for that to happen we must die to ourselves and begin to live for Christ. The way I stated that fact in relation to our series was, "It is better that we go down in a blaze, for God's glory." Once we have died to ourselves we then set our feet on the trail of risk and adventure. A life lived for God's glory will mean that we love Him and love others and that is costly, in fact sometimes it is risky. The way I stated that was, "We need more guts, for His glory."

Here's a little bit of what we will cover this Sunday: For the Gunslinger, Jesus Christ has become the all-consuming passion of their lives... Their desire is to reconnect humanity to Him. Their mission is to make others glad in God. We make others glad in God when we as Christians care for those around us by: providing food, clothes, shelter, and water, etc. That’s what Jesus meant when he said, Matt 5:16, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

See you this Sunday!

American Idol Prediction

I have watched very few episodes and very few minutes worth of American Idol this year. So I am no expert, but from what little I've seen I'm going to make my prediction that David Archuleta will win this evening. Every time I've heard that kid sing he has done a great job, every time I've heard David Cook sing he has been off pitch. I'm sure Cook can sing on pitch... just not when I'm watching the show.

So there you have it. The winner of this years American Idol David Archuleta... you can take that to the bank. What's your prediction?

Craig Groeschel from Lifechurch.tv has been posting a series on strategic disruptions in our life. Disrupting the regular rhythms of our life is a great way to infuse creativity and change our perspective.

I've been trying to make a few changes to my regular routine and am enjoying the results. Why not give it a shot yourself? You can read Craig's posts... here.

Look Mom, No Training Wheels

Do you remember the first day you rode your bike without training wheels? For me it was July 4th, 1977; I had just turned six and it was such a momentous moment that fireworks were deployed. :-) All I have are my memories from that evening - there was no camcorder; in fact, my parents didn't even get to see that moment.

This afternoon Shelby rode her bike without training wheels for the first time, so I grabbed the camcorder to catch this little bit of history for her...

I'm drinking Naked. (That should get me a few random blog hits :-)

This is the best juice I've ever had. This particular juice is called "Green Machine" apples, bananas, kiwis, mangoes, pineapple - 100% juice, no sugar added, yummy. It just makes you feel good drinking it. You can visit their website here. ... ... End of commercial - back to drinking my Naked ;-)

A Blessed Day

Today I'm taking a "personal day off". Tammy is having a ladies Bible study at the house this morning so I decided to go to St. Arbucks and work on sermons. So here I sit with my Mint Mocha Frap., sponging some free wifi, working on a future sermon. I know I should probably be doing something else on a "day off" but for me relaxing with some coffee and working on sermons in a different environment is actually fun. How many people get to do their jobs in different, and sometimes, creative environments? How many people actually love their jobs enough to want to do it on a "day off"? I'm blessed to be able to be doing exactly what God has wired me to do.

On an unrelated topic: on they way out of the driveway I snapped this picture...

If you look closely you will see stakes. Those stakes are marking the edge of the new paved road that is going to run in front of our house. We are finally going to get a paved street! I never thought I'd see the day. We are inside the city limits of "P-Town" but we have had a gravel road in front of our house. Being the only tax payers on this street I figured they would wait until the entire street had homes before they would pave it. Soon I will be able to drive down the road to my street without swerving to miss huge holes!

You all are the best 'prayers' ever! At the doctor's office today the simple test revealed that I don't have kidney stones. That is a huge answer to prayer; praise God. While we don't know what has caused the pain I experience for certain, the doctor tends to think that this may simply be some muscle issues. I'll take that over kidney stones any day. So my prayer is that I have some healing that needs to continue to occur in my muscles.

You prayed for me and I would like to return the blessing. What would you like prayer for? We have a good number of people that read this blog that would be honored to pray for you. Feel free to post your prayer requests in the comments and know that I, and perhaps dozens of others, will be praying for your need.

More Tests

One thing that this blog allows me to do is let people in on my life. I like that on one level because it lets people know just how normal (or abnormal in my case) a pastor can be. Sometimes it is difficult to let you know about me and I struggle, but I thought tonight I would let you in on a current struggle. If you read this post, you will recall that I received good news from the doctors office regarding some tests that I took a couple of weeks ago. Here's the latest: the doctors office called back yesterday and said they found something in one of my tests and they want me to come back in and retest. I don't think it's what they are suggesting I have - at least I'm praying super super super hard it's not what they suggested over the phone. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about I'll list my most recent Google searches...

symptoms of kidney stones
kidney stones pain
handling pain of kidney stones
what's more painful delivering a baby or passing a stone

Those that know me well know that I don't handle pain very well at all. So, just the thought of the possibility of kidney stones is making me sick. I will selfishly use my blog again to solicit your prayers. Please pray that we discover a less painful cause for my symptoms.

Tagged

Tracey Kisha and Mia tagged Amy - Amy tagged Tricia - Tricia tagged Tammy - Tammy tagged Me.

Here's how the tagging works:
(1) Each player answers questions about themselves.
(2) At the end of the post, tag 5 people by posting their names.
(3) Go to their site/blog and leave a comment telling them that they have been Tagged. Invite them to your site/blog so they can read the Tagged post.
(4) Let the person who tagged you know when you have completed your Tagged post.

1. What were you doing 10 years ago? We were interviewing at a few Friends churches here in Indiana (Little Blue River, Arba, and Upland) . We prayed about it and felt led to accept the positions at Upland and started in August 1998.

2. What are 5 things on your "To Do" list? 1. Breathe in and out... just kidding - do my devotions in the morning. 2. Read over the sermon for this Sunday (at least 2 times if not more). 3. Answer emails. 4. Prepare and print out information for 2 meetings tomorrow night. 5. Twitter like it's my job.

3. What are 5 snacks I enjoy. (I inadvertently left this out originally - oops) - 1. anything with chocolate. 2. any ice cream that doesn't contain walnuts. 3. any ice cream that contains chocolate ;-) 4. peeps. 5. chocolate covered peeps atop chocolate chocolate chip ice cream covered in chocolate sauce - with a cherry on top (cherries are healthy for you) ;-)

4. Name some things you would do if you were a millionaire. I'd pay off my "Building to Bless" pledge (capital campaign pledge) to the church, I think I'd buy myself a Mac Book Pro, Hire myself a personal assistant (they would type my blogs as I dictate to them, record video for sermons & blog posts, pick up Starbucks coffee for me, etc, etc.), I'd sponsor more kids. I'd financially support the planting of several churches oversees with the help of the Bible League. And I would give every one of my blog readers some cold hard cash, just because I love ya'll so much!

5. Name some places where you have lived. Hesper, Kansas; Riverton, Kansas; Mason City, Iowa; Plymouth, Iowa, Nora Springs, Iowa, Pittsburg, Kansas; Joplin, Missouri; Upland, Indiana; Farmland, Indiana; Parker City, Indiana

6. Name some bad habits you have. I'm a borderline hypochondriac. I used to chew my fingernails up until the 6th grade.

7. Name some jobs you have had. Front desk clerk at a Best Western. I worked in the electronics department here. I worked at a "rent to own" store making deliveries. Hit man (just wanted to see if you were still reading). Pastor.

8. Name those whom you are tagging: Todd Miller, James Pinkerton, Brian Cline, Derek Chalfant, Ronn Oren

Party At My House

I reached a milestone. I passed the million mark on Technorati! My ranking is 736,965 and I have a whopping authority of 13. Thanks for all the link love to my fellow peeps. It paid off to beg last month :-) It never hurts when Mr. Blog himself, Carlos Whittaker, gives you a little link love on his website. To celebrate I'm throwing a big party over at my house tonight... marshmallow peeps and coke for everyone.

I thought I'd be content just breaking a million, but now I've got a new goal... let's break half-a-million. I know what you're thinking, "That's just crazy Kris - leave it alone. Stop while you're ahead". I know, I know it's just crazy, and maybe even a little greedy - but I'm going for it. :-) And when I break 500K I'll have you all over for more marshmallow peeps and I will force Pastor Pink to make us all chicken tacos... bwaahahaha!

A Gunslinger's Confession

If you were at church this weekend you heard me make a confession, "Most of my life I live for me... I want my health and happiness more than I want God' glory revealed through my life... I don't look forward to being in heaven with God because I love life on earth more than I want to be in heaven... I have a difficult time treasuring Christ more than I treasure myself and my health and happiness... I'm struggling with my own mortality... 'For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain', is something that I struggle with." Those words were tough for me to say and they are hard to write because it reveals how selfish and self consumed I can be; I'm the pastor, I'm supposed to be the good example, I shouldn't fear dying or love this life more than the next.

It's difficult to explain the thoughts and feelings I've been having other than - I'm having a crisis of self. Dying to myself and longing for God's glory in my life is a real showdown. Deep down I long to be completely surrendered and make Christ supreme in all the spheres of my life.

I want to say with confidence like the Apostle Paul, "But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead."

So today as I faced the showdown, beyond my devotions and prayers, I repeated this to myself often, "This world is not my home... This world is not my home... This world is not my home..." And the prayer that I've whispered under my breath has been "God help me to love this world less and your Kingdom more." It may sound simple but it really helped to reinforce the truth in my mind - I have a better home waiting for me and while I am here I will live a life that glorifies my God!
