Quote of the Week

I found this quote in a book I recently read called, "Simple Church". The quote is from Tom Peters, "It is easier to kill an organization than it is to change it."

Amen to that!

Recap

I thought I’d recap just some of my day.

Started the day with a new attitude, determined to enjoy myself no matter what came my way.
Met our Gideon speaker at the church early this morning (a very nice gentleman who shared with our congregation about this great organization.)
Interacted with and thanked several volunteers around the church.
Preached the 8:30 service.
Joked around with and laughed with numerous people between services.
Readied the prop once again for the 10:30 service.
Copied some DVD’s of previous services to pass out to some individuals.
Had prayer with the 10:30 worship team.
Preached the 10:30 service.
Had a brief chat with a very interesting new believer following the 10:30 service (I’ve got to hear more of this man’s story).
Prayed for the healing of a young boy who has an abnormal growth on his brain.
Had lunch with a small group of people who had signed up for CLASS 201. (Great food; thanks Ann, I loved the dirt pudding served in the flower pot! =).
Taught CLASS 201 (Discovering Spiritual Maturity Class).
Came home - took a quick nap.
Played some games with Shelby.
Got a hair cut before our growth group (Thanks Kimberly, I’m now officially ready for my vacation to Florida =).
Growth group met at 6:30 p.m. – always a great time with the folks I get “to do life” with.
Took a quick jog.
Sat outside and spent some time praying and enjoying the beautiful moon this evening.
Showered.
Blogged.

Saturday Night Reflections

I really thought this evening’s service went well. The worship band sounded great, the media team was on the mark, those who were greeting and serving did a great job. There was a good vibe this evening. I really think God is pleased when we give Him our very best. When we give Him our best in all aspects of worship He shows up in a powerful way and does a work in people’s lives that only He can do, and that is what the leadership of our church longs for.

You’ve got to get to church tomorrow and check out the prop I’m using to make a point. I love visual illustrations and this one really drives home the point. If you don’t live in the area or can’t be at church tomorrow; stop by our website and watch the service live at 10:30 EST. There will be a link on the home page that you can click and watch the service. (You will need a broadband connection). Technology is so cool!

The Joy of Testing

This verse has been rolling around in my head today.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

Let me just say, I am so full of pure joy.

Grandmas Rock

Tammy’s mother, Linda, has been visiting us this week from Iowa. I’m fortunate; Linda and I get along very well. I know not everyone can say that about their in-laws but Linda is awesome. I think Shelby has enjoyed having her Grandma here with us this week too. How could you not enjoy more My Little Ponies, clothes, eating out, hugs, shoes, more Ponies, cookies, carousel rides, more clothes, attention, and toys? Grandmas are great – however I think Shelby is going to go through withdrawals. =)

Seizing Your Dream

Thought for the day:

A dream becomes reality when we begin seizing the God ordained opportunities in front of us.

Prop Prep

I’m always amazed at how many people are constantly at the church working on something. It seems like no matter what time of day it is there is someone there getting something done; we have some great volunteers at our church.

This evening I was at the church painting a mega size prop that I will be using this Sunday. Kevin Cash did a great job of putting it together for me. I’m really looking forward to using this prop on Sunday, you won’t want to miss it. This will be our final message in the “Prison Break” series and I will be speaking on greed. Nothing like tackling all the easy subjects in this series =) (Hell, Religiosity, Addiction, & Money).

...

Oh, by the way, I've heard a rumor that there will be another IPod contest at church soon.

My 2 Cents

Here’s what I love about blogging:

I get to reveal a bit more of myself to those who go to our church who may not otherwise know me very well.

I also get the opportunity to share thoughts about pastoring and leadership with other pastors or church leaders who may swing by this blog.

But my favorite thing about blogging is that I get to share my opinion. And it’s MY opinion; not just Pastor Kris’ opinion, but Kris’ opinion; my likes and my dislikes. I’m well aware that you will not agree with all of my opinions but quite frankly I’m not writing your opinion I’m writing mine.

I know my opinion is not shared by everyone, and that’s ok. I don’t agree with all of your opinions and I don’t like all the things you like; that’s what makes us individuals. But that never stops people from always wanting you to march to the beat of their drum.

In the past I would rarely share my opinion out of a fear that I might make someone in the church (or elsewhere) unhappy. As I get older, I’m getting over that. It seems like people are more than happy to share their likes, dislikes, and opinions with me, hoping that I (Pastor) will nod and agree with them. And to be honest, many times I’m polite and I don’t share my opinion and I just listen and move on. I’ve learned that some people don’t really care about my opinion they just want their opinion to be heard and I’m always willing to listen.

This blog is cathartic for me because what I share here are some of my personal thoughts. And, hopefully, while I share my thoughts and opinions, somewhere along the way this blog may be beneficial to others.

Any comments? Feel free to post, I’m not promising that I’ll agree with you - - but I will respect your opinion.

Praising God

Tonight I’m praising God for all the people this weekend who stepped up and said, “Enough is enough, I will not stay in the prison of addiction anymore!” Thank you for your continued prayers for these individuals as they leave a life lived in a prison and move into a life of freedom in Christ.

Next week is our final message in the series “Prison Break”. Next week we are going to break out of the prison of greed.

Church Leadership

The interesting (by “interesting”, I mean challenging) thing about church leadership is that as a pastor I am leading (or attempting to lead) a large organization of volunteers. I believe Church leadership is much more challenging than leading in the business world. In the business realm those in leadership have a very specific type of leverage – money. If you don’t show up to work or your work is poor quality, then you won’t have a job for much longer. In the church, the only leverage we have is - - - vision. Not showing up and poor quality cannot be excused away simply because “I’m a volunteer”.

In the business world the mission is simply the bottom line, for example, how many “thingamajigs” can we sell? In the church the mission is eternal and what is at stake is not a bottom line, but souls. It is my responsibility as leader to communicate that in such a way that progress is made toward our mission in an excellent and effective way.

Smiling Addiction

As I mentioned in an earlier post, this weekend at our church we are going to see people breaking out of the prison of addiction. I wanted to share a video with you that I absolutely love! I was there the night this video won at the Innovative Church Conference Film Festival and I thought it was the best video I’d ever seen; great concept, great camera work, great song, great message. Check this out…

Pastor's Dessert

This evening we had what we call a “Pastor’s Dessert”; we used to call it “Pastor’s Coffee” but we changed it for those who may have thought they had to drink coffee to attend. So I guess Pastor’s Dessert is more palatable (pun intended).

The Pastor’s Dessert is an opportunity for those who are new to the church to get an opportunity to meet me and the other pastor’s in a casual atmosphere in a home (I generally have to use other homes since Shelby is getting ready for bed around that time). I share about our church’s mission, how people can get connected. I also take that opportunity to ask people how they first started coming to Farmland Friends Church and to see what they like about the church.

Generally people respond by saying they like the children’s program, worship style, growth groups, or the preaching (I think they say this because I’m in the room with them). Tonight I also heard things like – “My family enjoys the unpretentious atmosphere.” “We like to wear comfortable clothes and grab a cup of coffee and our Bible and worship God.” Or, “I really enjoyed seeing people greet one another and I saw people laughing and smiling in church and wondered, ‘can you do that in church’?” I enjoy hearing people’s take on our church and what it is that they enjoy.

What do you like about the church that you attend?

Google Search Queen

I’m so proud of “The Preacher’s Wife”. I don’t know too many people personally that come up as the number one hit on a google search. But that is exactly where she sits – numero uno on the google search. It was her February 10th post that put her there. If you happen to be searching for the term “lolaisms” you will find The Preacher’s wife at the top of the list (and who hasn't searched for the term "lolaisms"?). I can’t begin to tell you how exciting it is to know someone who sits at the top in the web community.

Prison Break - Addiction

This weekend I will be continuing our series called “Prison Break”; the prison we will be breaking out of this weekend is Addiction. The Bible tells us that we become a slave to whatever it is that holds us in bondage. The list of things that people can be addicted to is almost limitless. Our community is filled with people who are imprisoned by their addictions and it is heavy on my heart to point them to the One with the key.

My prayer for this weekend is that people would identify addictions they may have and take the necessary steps to break out of the prison that is holding them back. Our God is bigger than any addiction and I believe that people are going to be set free by His power this weekend. Please be praying that God does a powerful work in the lives of people at FFC this weekend.

Sobering Thought

On Easter Sunday I made the comment that there are no "do-overs" in hell. The worst part about being in hell would be knowing what could have been but never will be. The nice thing about being on this side of eternity is that we can do better today so that tomorrow is different - there is no chance of that in hell.

Hell begins the day God grants you the vision to see all that you could have done, should have done, and would have done, but did not do.” - Johann Wolfgang von Goeth

Planning or Pursuing?

If you are anything like me you’d like to know what the future holds for you. I’d like to have all the plans in place and to know what is around the corner. However, faith involves embracing uncertainty.

We can make plans until we are blue in the face and we could miss what is more important, seeking God. Plans are great and we need to be strategic about our lives, our careers, and our churches but we can’t let the plans get in the way of the pursuit.

I like what Mark Batterson wrote in his book, “In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day”, “We’ll never have all the answers. And some people never come to terms with this truth. The feel like something is wrong with them because they can’t wrap their minds around God. But maybe faith has less to do with gaining knowledge and more to do with causing wonder.”

There are some things in this life that we won’t be able to plan or predict, but what we have at our disposal is the ability to seek hard after God. This week my plan is to loosen the reins on control and planning every detail and pursue the One who holds my future in His hands.

Changes on the Horizon

Tomorrow the staff and the elders of FFC are getting together for our annual elder’s retreat. I’m looking forward to spending several hours with the leaders of our church and learning together.

I think our church is on the verge of implementing some very beneficial changes that will help us to be much more effective in the future. Right now the leadership is in the learning mode but I’m anxious for the implementation to begin. When we get closer to making any changes I’ll be sure to post about it.

Testing Out Mobile Blogging

This should be an interesting experiment. I’m testing out to see if I can blog simply by sending an email. Looks like it worked – yeah.

I also wanted to point you to something pretty interesting, check out http://www.jott.com/. This is a free service that allows you to use a phone to send yourself and others emails and reminders. I’m going to test it out for a few weeks and see if I can find some creative ways to use it – perhaps to see if I can “phone in” my blog – that would be interesting.

Religous People Beware

I was able to get a lot more done today with fewer interruptions. I am feeling much better about this weekend’s message; I put the finishing touches on it today. It really started to take shape once I could dedicate 4 straight hours on it.

This Sunday I will be talking about breaking out of the prison of religion. Last year I did a series called “Religion Stinketh” and had a lot of fun with it. Here is an example of some of the buttons that I’ll be pushing this weekend…

"The Latin word for religion means "to bind or tie up." Religion can bind you so that you are not experiencing the kind of freedom that Christ came to bring to you.

Here are some observations I’ve made about religion: religion seeks control but love gives control. Most often the “religious” folks I see are the controllers; they want the power; don’t you dare make a decision without their two cents or they’ll throw a fit.

Religious people want to control everyone’s thoughts and behaviors; it’s like they become the Holy Spirit police. They will set up rules for everyone else to follow and soon what was supposed to be a relationship turns into legalism. “Don’t go there, don’t wear that, don’t listen to that, don’t drink that, don’t say that, don’t eat that… don’t eat that in here…”

I’ve also noticed that religion condemns but love brings hope. Religion brings a critical spirit. You know who Christians are most critical of? One another.

Why is it that Christians spend so much time keeping track of one another? Why not let God take care of that. We've got enough to worry about just with ourselves. I see other pastors slamming pastors who have growing vibrant churches and I’m like, “What are you doing? We’re on the same team!”

The prison of religion is always an inside job. It was happening when Jesus was on the scene in Jerusalem. The Pharisees are the epitome of religion gone bad
..."

You should really show up to church this week and watch all the religious people squirm ;=)

Enough Meetings for One Week

Well, I am officially “meetinged” out. Tonight was my third evening meeting of this week, not to mention all the meetings throughout the day of the last several days. I think the rest of the staff is a little worn out too. I am so far behind on the message at this point that I am starting to get a little worried. Hopefully tomorrow there won’t be any surprises so that I can spend a little time working on the message and then some time with my family in the afternoon. Weeks like this happen from time to time and I have to remind myself that life is a series of sprints – and then rests – sprints – and rests. I’m in a sprint right now and looking forward to my day off on Friday.

Heroes Tragedy (edit)

My wife clued me into something last night after reading my post (and saw me crying on the sofa:-). On the little widget that I placed on the web it starts out by saying “As Heroes enters the final chapters of the season…” They failed to say that on the promo last night (at least from my recollection). What I heard last night on TV was something to the effect of “the last 5 chapters…” so the jury is still out. What do you think? Can anyone answer this very important question? Is Heroes done after 5 more episodes, or will there be more? I will not rest until my troubled mind finds solace!

Heroes Tragedy

I just saw something very disturbing on TV; I saw a promo for the show Heroes – which I love. So I watch the promo intently and at the end they say that in will be on 2 weeks from now AND it will be the final 5 chapters of the show. WHAT! The last 5 episodes are you kidding me!? Surely this is some kind of sick stunt to get more people to watch… say it aint so.

I can’t believe it; Heroes will be just 29 episodes and ER has been on for what - - a quarter of a century!!!? What’s wrong with this world? Write to your congressmen and let them know about this injustice, organize marches, boycott… something.

Easter Message Report (day 2)

Unbelievable! Today was fantastic. The worship team sounded great, the media team hit all of their cues, the children blessed us with music, and God showed up in a powerful way! We had 11 more people give their life to Christ this morning. This Easter weekend 16 souls have a new destination.

Thank you so much for your prayers for people to yield their life to Christ. My prayer now is that these 16 individual would not let the trials, or worries, or pleasures, or riches of this life pull them away from their new found commitment to Christ (Luke 8:11-15).

It is days like this that keep me motivated. I’ve always wanted to be a part of a movement of God; I’m not interested in playing church. I’m interested in making an eternal difference in as many lives as God will allow me. I’m leaving my lion chasing shoes on and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for me, these new Christ Followers, and FFC over the next several weeks.

Easter Message Report

This evening I did the unthinkable and preached on hell for the Easter message. The mood was pretty heavy in the sanctuary tonight. Hell is not the most exciting thing to talk about; I’d much rather have a conversation about furry little bunnies, Easter dresses, and lilies. But none of those things will prepare us for the inevitable reality of the afterlife.

While the atmosphere may have been thick, God was doing His work and touching people’s hearts. I’m excited to report that 5 individuals gave their life to Christ this evening! I’m so glad I took the step of faith and was obedient to preach about what God laid on my heart. Thank you so much for your prayers. As a result, there will be 5 more people celebrating in heaven for all eternity! I am excited to see what happens tomorrow at both of our Easter services; keep praying that the Risen One is glorified and people make a decision to follow hard after Him.

Prison Break

This Easter weekend I will be doing something a bit unorthodox – I will be preaching about death and hell. I don't know of to many pastors crazy enough to preach about hell on Easter Sunday. The series is called “Prison Break” and week one we will be talking about breaking out of the ultimate prison - death. Thank God Jesus has already broken out of that prison and He is the key for our escape.

Would you do me a favor, and whisper a quick prayer that people will receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior in all three of our services this weekend? I’m praying to see lives changed this Easter weekend.

Office Confession

I’ll just go ahead and confess it – you were bound to find out sometime. I’m a fan of the TV show The Office. There are times when I watch it that I laugh - - hard. Every now and then I need a good hard laugh and there are times that The Office provides that for me...
There, I feel better after confessing.

Michael Scott: Yeah, I went hunting once. Shot a deer in the leg. Had to kill it with a shovel. Took about an hour. Why do you ask?

Dwight Schrute: Would I ever leave this company? Look, I'm all about loyalty. In fact, I feel like part of what I'm being paid for here is my loyalty. But if there were somewhere else that valued loyalty more highly, I'm going wherever they value loyalty the most.

Michael Scott: You may look around, and see two groups here. White collar, blue collar. But I don't see it that way. You know why not? Because I am collar-blind.

Michael Scott: I enjoy having breakfast in bed. I like waking up to the smell of bacon- sue me- and since I don’t have a butler, I have to do it myself. So most nights before I go to bed I will lay six strips of bacon out on my George Foreman Grill. Then I go to sleep. When I wake up, I plug in the grill. I go back to sleep again. Then I wake up to the smell of crackling bacon. It is delicious. It’s good for me. It’s the perfect way to start the day. Today I got up, I stepped onto the grill and it clamped down on my foot. That’s it. I don’t see what’s so hard to believe about that?

Michael Scott: I am king of forwards. It's how I like to do business, everybody joking around.

Pam Beesley: I get ten vacation days a year and I try to hold off taking them for as long as possible. This year I got to the third week in January.

Furry Guest Blogger

Hi, I’m Caedmon and I’ll be blogging for my daddy this evening. Daddy has been a little stressed and grouchy lately so he asked if I’d fill in. Let me tell you a little about myself: I’m a bichon frise and I’m 8 years old. I enjoy belly rubs, napping, and sneaking food I shouldn’t be eating. I’m very talented; I can roll over, sit, stay, shake, … and oh yeah, I just picked up typing I’m not doing too bad huh?

Reframe the Pain

Over the past 9 years of pastoral ministry I’ve come across a lot of hurting people: death, divorce, adultery, murder, suicide, abuse, addiction, jealousy, hatred, bankruptcy... The opportunities for hurt and pain to enter our lives seem almost limitless. Everyone will experience some level of pain or grief in their life, some to a greater degree than others. The one common thread that all of us face is what to do with our pain/grief. If we are to heal after pain comes into our life we must determine to reframe the pain.

Here are some of the highlights that I underlined in chapter 4 (The Art of Reframing) of “In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day” by Mark Batterson.

Sometimes an unanswered prayer is God, in His sovereign wisdom, sparing us the pain of unintended consequences. Sometimes God allows what His power could prevent…Don’t let what’s wrong with you keep you from worshipping what’s right with God…The circumstance you complain about become chains that imprison you. And worship is the way out. Worship reframes our problems and refocus our lives…No adversity equals no opportunity… If you don’t turn your adversity into a ministry, then your pain remains your pain.”

Reframing the problems in our lives involves looking through a different set of lenses. We need to stop focusing on the pain/problem and start focusing on what’s right with our God. That simple act of reframing can bring life back to your spirit.

Fear or Boredom

Mark Batterson’s book, “In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day” is filled with great one liner nuggets of truth. Let me give you some of the highlights that I underlined in chapter 3 titled, “Unlearning Your Fears”.

“Don’t accumulate possessions, accumulate experiences…Psychiatrists posit that we’re born with only two innate fears: the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. That means that every other fear is learned. And more importantly, that means that every other fear can be unlearned…Lion chasers have learned to face those fears…One of the greatest things that could happen to you is for your fear to become a reality. Then you would discover that it’s not the end of the world…Maybe it is time to quit running and time to start chasing…The goal of life is not the elimination of fear; the goal is to muster the moral courage to chase lions…Soren Kierkegaard went so far as to say that “boredom is the root of all evil”…If you’re bored, one thing is for sure: You’re not following in the footsteps of Christ.”

It is your choice, fear or boredom. I think I’ll embrace fear, boredom sucks. I would hate to look back on my life and be filled with regret for the things that I never tried. I'd rather try and fail then never try at all. My lion chasing shoes have been sitting in the corner for way too long. I'll be lacing up my shoes - you can join me if you want.

Dropping the Guilt and Shame

This is what it looks like when over 400 people drop their guilt and shame and leave it at the foot of the cross...

The enemy tells you, "You are going to have to remember your sin and carry that guilt around like a badge the rest of your life!" But the truth is, guilt and condemnation have been taken care of at the cross of Christ.
Romans 8:1, "Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus"!!!!!!!
