The interesting (by “interesting”, I mean challenging) thing about church leadership is that as a pastor I am leading (or attempting to lead) a large organization of volunteers. I believe Church leadership is much more challenging than leading in the business world. In the business realm those in leadership have a very specific type of leverage – money. If you don’t show up to work or your work is poor quality, then you won’t have a job for much longer. In the church, the only leverage we have is - - - vision. Not showing up and poor quality cannot be excused away simply because “I’m a volunteer”.
In the business world the mission is simply the bottom line, for example, how many “thingamajigs” can we sell? In the church the mission is eternal and what is at stake is not a bottom line, but souls. It is my responsibility as leader to communicate that in such a way that progress is made toward our mission in an excellent and effective way.
