TXT

Last Sunday we began a new series called, "TXT". We are discussing the most important text, the Bible. During this three week series we are interacting via our cell phones. We have partnered with www.jarbyco.com and are asking survey questions of the congregation and having folks send in questions about the Bible to me during the message.

My goal with this series is to simply raise the level of interaction that we as a church have with God's Word. Unfortunately, many people neglect God's word. As a culture we spend a lot of time with our cell phones texting, in fact, as of June 2008 we send over 75 billion text messages every month. That is a lot of time spent texting and reading texts. What if people spent as much time with the Bible as they do with their cell phones?

Changing The Church Name

Alright, this is just too applicable not to re-post. The following is from Tony Morgan's blog.

"Last week, I started a conversation about brand names. I tried to make the case (you can judge how successfully) that a name does very little, if anything, to sell a product or service or experience. The value added matters. The quality matters. Whether or not it’s addressing a perceived need matters. The name doesn’t matter…not at least until the brand is established.

On the other hand, I do think that a name can limit the sales of a product or service or experience. Let’s look at some obvious examples. If I’m shopping for food, I’m unlikely to go to a Starbucks Coffeehouse. I’ll go to a Starbucks Coffeehouse if I’m looking for coffee, but the name has limited the potential market. Starbucks sells coffee.

Taco Bell sells tacos and other Mexican food. If I’m hungry for a hamburger, I don’t go to Taco Bell. By putting “taco” in the name, they’ve already decided they’re probably not going to sell food to hamburger shoppers.

Now let me shoot closer to home. How about Anytown Baptist Church? As long as you’re trying to reach baptists, that’s a great name. Just so you know, though, most people that don’t consider themselves baptists (which is more and more people) will assume Anytown Baptist Church is only for baptists.

Here’s the reality, if Taco Bell started selling hamburgers and they were really good hamburgers, ultimately someone might buy their burger. One happy Taco Bell burger-eater might tell their friend to try one out. When that happens, the friend’s first reaction will be “Taco Bell sells tacos.” Taco Bell could dip into their deep marketing pockets and launch a huge campaign to tell people they now sell burgers. If it’s an effective campaign, it might convince more people to try their burgers. But, for a long, long time, people will likely first think of Taco Bell as a taco restaurant and not a hamburger joint.

The problem is that churches rarely, if ever, have that kind of bank. We can’t afford the type of marketing campaign it would take to try to convince people that Anytown Baptist Church isn’t just for baptists. For a long, long time baptist churches will be for baptists. And, whether you like it or not, people who aren’t baptists, have preconceived notions about what baptists are like and what happens at their churches.

So, when I’m asked whether or not a church should change it’s name, my initial response isn’t: “What’s the new name you’re considering?” My first response is: “What’s your mission?”

If your mission is to minister to the families that are currently attending your church, you shouldn’t change your name. If your mission is to reach people who have a proclivity to a specific denomination, then you probably don’t need to change your name. If you believe that God has predestined some people to attend your church and others not to, there’s really no need to change your name. (Which makes me wonder why God let you read this post…but that’s a topic for another day.)

If, on the other hand, the mission of your church is to reach people who are currently unchurched, then you need to ask the name question. If your primary mission is to reach people in our post-denominational culture, then you need to ask the name question.

Names don’t sell a new product. Names do sell an established product. Names also have the potential of limiting your market.

Does the name matter? It depends on your mission…and it depends on your name. Your first job, though, is to agree on the mission."

Men's Retreat

I really enjoyed attending the men's retreat. We enjoyed some great time of worship and study with 20 men from our church. I was sorry that I had to leave early to get back and preach the Sunday services because I was having such a great time hanging out with the men.

I did a lot of "manly" things this weekend that I don't normally get to do: shooting clay pigeons, destroying stuff with a sword, chopping wood, sitting around the campfire, etc. I came home smelling like a campfire and bacon; the girls asked me to change and shower quickly.

My most memorable moment was recorded on my cell phone...

Men's Retreat

This weekend myself and a number of men from our church will be embarking on a men's retreat called "Man Up". Brent Smith and Nate Canady have put a lot of time and creativity into the weekend and I'm looking forward to hanging out with a bunch of great guys.

I'm sure there will be plenty of belching, scratching, and shooting of guns; but I'm also anticipating that through the worship, Bible study, and personal time with the Lord that many of the families in our church will be positively impacted.

I will have to leave Saturday evening in order to get back to preach on Sunday. (Side note - don't forget to bring your Bibles AND your cell phones to church this Sunday for the beginning of our "TXT" series)

Northern Ireland Mission Trip

Our mission trip to Northern Ireland was absolutely amazing. While we were there I had to keep pinching myself to be reminded that I wasn't dreaming. Northern Ireland is so beautiful; it is the kind of beauty that helps you to forget just how cold and damp it really is.

Our goal in going over there was to begin creating relationships for upcoming mission trips for our youth group. We have some excellent contacts now, and a clearer picture of the need and spiritual climate of the area that we will be ministering in.

While the country of Ireland is fantastically beautiful, there is a spiritual poverty that is very noticeable. It is estimated that only 1% of the population is "evangelical Christian", and the vast majority of people are resistant to the gospel. We witnessed a generation of youth that are in desperate need of hope and direction in their lives; the kind of hope and fulfillment that only Jesus Christ can provide. While the numbers may seem overwhelming, there is what I would call, a "remnant" of Christians in Northern Ireland who are praying that Jesus Christ would reign supreme in the lives of individuals there.

My desire is that the youth of our church would be a part of answering that prayer by establishing ongoing relationships with the youth of that region. Please pray for Pastor Pink, his team of leaders, and the youth group as they begin preparing to take their first mission trip to Northern Ireland in 2010.

Happy Birthday Tammy

Please pardon me as I interrupt my regularly scheduled blog posts to break in with this very personal message to my wife... Happy Birthday Tammy!

I'm sorry I can't be with you today on your birthday. But I wanted to make sure that you heard from me in some way, since I'm not sure if I will have the chance to contact you while I am in Ireland on the mission trip.

It seems like our birthdays keep flying by one right after the other; it seems like we were celebrating your 25th birthday a few months ago and now here you are at the age of 26 =) Don't worry I won't give your age away on this blog.

I love you. Give Shelby a hug for me. I will be home soon.

Happy St. Patrick's Day. As luck would have it (pun intended), if all goes according to plan Pastor Pink and I will be in Downpatrick Northern Ireland today and we will be IN their St. Patrick's Day parade.

Should be interesting.

Ireland Mission Trip

On Friday afternoon (March 13) Pastor Pink and I will be joining with my brother-in-law, Ronn Oren and CSI ministries, and traveling to Northern Ireland. Specifically we will be staying at the Murlough House; located in Dundrum.

While in Ireland we will be partnering with Project Evangelism and assisting with a couple of projects. James and I are also "scouting out" and lining up potential mission work for our teens to tackle in 2010.

While I am away the blog should update each day. You can also follow Pink's blog, as he has mentioned that he will be posting video while we are on the trip. Your prayers would be appreciated for us and our families while we are away.

If you would like to learn more about the Murlough House and Project Evangelism you can click HERE and HERE.

Economic Confidence

I'm not an economist; but I do realize that there are two things that drive our economy: fear and greed (by the way, neither of these are godly). In our current state of economy it is obvious that fear has been ruling. I think of the scene in "It's a Wonderful Life", when there is a run on the bank because of fear. I love the part in the movie when George Bailey steps up confidently and speaks some common sense to those who are fearful.

Vince Lombardi once said, "Confidence is contagious. So is lack of confidence." I'm confident that you and I have nothing to worry about.

Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

Pacer Game

Tuesday night I enjoyed going to the Pacer game with my brother-in-law, my nephew, my niece, and my father. This was the first pro-basketball game for the kids AND for my dad. In this short clip you will see my dad hold the tail of one of the mascots of the Pacers.

Pacers lost to the Jazz by the way; but I scored this video of my dad being goofy and Bowser whacking him with his ear and then wagging his finger at him. =)

Here he is coloring in Tiffany's coloring book...

$#!%

Sunday at church I had a very interesting conversation with a gentleman. This is an individual that I've never counseled personally; just handshakes, and small chat here and there as he has been attending church regularly. He approached me before the second service began shook my hand and said, "Hey, I just want to thank you for your help in my life. You've helped me avoid a lot of illegal $#!%; thanks man."

I'm not sure how some "religious" people would respond when they hear the word, "$#!%" in the sanctuary; I know what I did - I thanked God for the opportunity to reach out to a man who obviously had/has some troubling circumstances. I thanked God for the privilege of being able to speak into his life and to begin to point him to the Source of all hope and life.

While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Matthew 9:10-13

Wisdom Part 3 (Morality)

To catch the other two posts related to this one click HERE.

The question that needs to be asked at every juncture of life is this, "What is the wise thing to do. "What is the wise thing to do with my money; what is the wise thing to do with my time; what is the wise thing to do in regard to my morality.

Realistically, a moral failure really shouldn't be a big surprise to the person who has sinned. The decisions that we've made that were wrong morally were preceded by a series of smaller wrong decisions. The way that you blew it big time was the result of passing by all of the red flags and saying “well there’s nothing wrong with this, there’s nothing illegal about this, others are doing it, is there a verse against it?" and then you blew it. Every moral failure is preceded by a number of unwise decisions.

"He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but he who walks wisely will be delivered." Proverbs 28:26

Sleepwalking Fail

I know I probably shouldn't laugh so hard and so long at this video, but I can't help myself.

Service Reminder

PLEASE for the love of all that is good in this world; don't forget to move your clocks forward on Saturday night. I'd hate to see the embarrassed look on your face when you step into church an hour late... come to think of it, I might actually get a kick out of that.

Lifechurch.tv put together a little video to kindly remind their folks to adjust their clocks...

Thanks

This is a late post tonight because I got back from a meeting fairly late. Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for stopping by and reading my blog. Some of you have been here since the beginning back in November of 2006. I really appreciate the feedback many of you give from time to time. Some of you I've never met face to face before, but I really enjoy the sense of community that we can share online.

If you have not joined the conversations on Twitter I would invite you to stop by the Twitter site, sign up for an account, and set up your phone to receive text messages from myself and a few others and join the conversations. I mention this because very shortly my little Twitter widget to the right is going bye-bye, and the only way to follow will be by "following" me via Twitter clients or through your cell phone.

Thanks again for reading this blog and being a part of this little community.

Thanks

Spring Is Coming!

Must be Easter time. As soon as one bag is gone, another bag appears. They are reproducing like rabbits...

I'm not complaining though.

Masquerading Insecurity

Steven Furtick has a great post today. Check IT out.

One of the quotes...

"When you find yourself spending more time critiquing the methods and motivations of someone who’s doing a good work for God, check yourself.
You might be masquerading your own insecurity."

Wisdom Part 2

In the last post I talked about the "little defense attorney" that we have on the inside of all of us. Here is our default mode when making decisions; we ask things like, "is it legal, is everybody else doing it, is it moral, is there a verse against it, does it feel right, where's the edge, how far is too far?..."

The better question to ask is: "What is the wise thing to do?" What is the wise thing to do considering your past experiences, your current circumstances, and your future hopes and dreams?

"Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise" Ephesians 5:15a

Wisdom

"He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but he who walks wisely will be delivered." Proverbs 28:26

Inside of every one of us is a little defense attorney by the name of "Adam". Ever since the fall of man, in the Garden, we have a little attorney arguing a case to walk in the direction of temptation and impulses. Given enough time we make bad ideas sound like good ideas. Our hearts are fickle and deceptive. That is why we can't live our life and make decisions simply off of our emotions; our hearts will take us down a path that ultimately leads to the wrong places. Wisdom, however, is a much better guide.

At every juncture of our life the question is not: is it legal, is it ethical, is it permissible, is there a verse against it, does it feel right? The question needs to be, "What is the wise thing to do?" What is the wise thing to do: in our marriages, with our money, in regard to morality, with our relationships? If you and I can seek wisdom rather than listening to our cleverly crafted arguments from within, we will be much better off.
