The Scoop

OK, here’s the inside scoop for all you faithful “changeisgood4u” blog readers… there is a benefit to reading this blog; bet you thought it was just for numbing your mind.

Here’s the deal - you are going to want to attend FFC on March 11. We will be giving away a free IPod. That’s right a free 2 gig IPod nano – spread the word…better brush up on the book of Philippians.

I’ll give more details about how to win the IPod this Sunday (March 4). You must be present March 11 for a chance to win. – let the buzz begin!

Straight Talk

This Sunday there will an abundance of pastors sharing during the message ("Straight Talk"). Our Pastor of Administration, Outreach Pastor, Youth Pastor, and myself will be sharing about our ministries and some future direction of the church. I’m looking forward to giving each of these pastors an opportunity to share their hearts about their respective ministries and what they are looking forward to in the future.

I’m going to be sharing some interesting statistical facts and a couple of specific next steps that we can take as a congregation to accomplish our mission of seeing changed lives. Plus, I’m going to be using a piece of technology that we haven’t tried out yet in a service – it should be pretty cool (I love technology and using it in creative ways. Pastor Bryan has some of his own unique issues). If FFC is your church home you’ll need to come and hear the other pastors and see what technology I’m talking about.

Growth Group Heroes

I have the greatest growth group! This evening a couple of guys from my growth group really helped me out. We were having some troubles with our water heater tripping the electrical breaker; nothing major, but it made for some rather uncomfortable showers.

First, Kevin came over this afternoon and checked out the heater with a 'thingamajigy' (I'm not very mechanically inclined - can you tell?). Once Kevin discovered that our element was out he passed the baton to Chiper who came over with a brand new element and some elbow grease and got us back up and running.

It may seem like a small thing but it means so much to me to be part of a community where people truly care for one another. If you are not part of a growth/small group of people you don't know what you are missing.

Post Preaching Poderings

I had the wonderful privilege/challenge of speaking on tithing today at church. I would call it a privilege, because I know every time I share the truth of God's Word someone is going to take me up on the challenge to order their lives according to God's Word. I call it a challenge because there is always significant "push back" from folks (even if it's not verbalized; you can sense it) when I start talking about money. Money is so personal, and it is such an important spiritual topic. There are few other things that are such a good indicator of our relationship with Christ than where we are in relation to our attitude regarding money.
Matthew 6:21, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." - Jesus.
Soul search: what kind of grip does your money/stuff have on you?

Random Comments

Just some random thoughts for this evening -

We are dealing with a very excited 3 year old (soon to be 4) this evening. Shelby is bouncing off the walls because tomorrow is her birthday. I remember getting very excited around my birthday; I couldn't wait to be one year older... I no longer have that problem ;-)

I'm officially tired of winter now. Can we just call the whole winter off now? The weather forecasters believe we are going to have freezing rain tonight and tomorrow morning. We get a little gun shy when we hear the word freezing rain around here. We have flashbacks of 2 years ago when freezing rain knocked out our power for a week or more. (I like to remind everyone I know that I immediately went to Florida the day after the storm hit, that's always fun to rub in). Do you suppose if global warming gets bad enough we could one day have the same climate as Florida?

I'm praying that the ice doesn't come so that everyone can make it to church tomorrow. So many people put in so much time and energy to make Sundays happen that it would be a shame to not have a great turn out at church each week. The folks on the media team have been working hard to put a video together and we should be able to show Kimberly's testimony tomorrow and I don't want a single person to miss it.

Leading Change

I’ve been doing a lot of listening, praying, thinking, etc. about where our church (Farmland Friends Church) is at spiritually/structurally/emotionally, etc. God always gets my attention when I begin to sense that our church is coasting rather than burning white hot for Him. As the Pastor I think it is my job to discern this and try to find where any problems may lie or if God is just silent for a season. Please don’t get me wrong, I believe God is still at work and good things are happening within our congregation. I just have a sense that there is a corner to be turned.

Sometimes the corner to be turned is a simple issue/fix; other times it means some challenging changes that need to occur. I’m starting to get a handle on some of the things that need to change so that our church can continue to accomplish the mission that God has given us. Some of the changes are specific to me and my attitude; others involve changes that must occur within the church.

While these changes may not come immediately, I do know that whenever I begin to implement a change within the church or challenge the way things are done, I’m starring conflict in the face. Something I’ve heard Charles Stanley say before is that, as pastors we need to be able to say, “I am going to make a decision to obey God and leave the consequences to Him.” If I can’t say those words then I am setting myself up for compromise. If I can’t obey what God is telling me because I am afraid of the consequences then I have no business being the leader of this church. The wonderful thing is that God assumes full responsibility for my obedience to Him. If He is the one giving direction to me to lead then if I’m obedient I will be blessed no matter who opposes me.

Faith Stretching

I love it when people step outside of their comfort zone and stretch their faith. This week the award for faith stretching goes to Kimberly. Kim attends our growth group that has been meeting in our home; normally Aaron leads and does a fantastic job. However, this last Sunday both Aaron and I couldn’t be at growth group so we had to enlist a brave volunteer to lead the group. Kimberly stepped up to the plate and I hear that she did a great job. I know she was super nervous but she did it afraid, and God smiled. Kimberly took another step of faith the other night and let the Media Team at church interview her on camera for an upcoming video testimony. If all goes according to plan not only will Kim be blessed this Sunday but so will many others in our congregation. I’m so proud of Kimberly and her husband Nathan; I’ve seen them both grow a lot over the last year.

Where could you step out on faith this week and be a blessing to others and in turn be blessed yourself? Why not try something new this week and step out of your comfort zone. When you surrender to the Lord and make yourself available to Him there’s no telling how many lives you could touch.

Long Day

Today was one of those long days at the office. I spent a good 12.5 hours at the church (as well as several of the staff). Tammy and Shelby did bring supper into the church today so I took about 30 minutes with them. The odd thing is, it didn't feel like I got a whole lot more done than if I were there for 5 hours. I hate unproductive days like that. I definitely should have heeded Craig Groeschel's advice.

Honestly, the best thing I did all day was crack open my Bible and be reminded why I'm doing what I'm doing (even if what I was doing was spinning my wheels most of the day)...

Here's to a productive tomorrow.

Snowwoman & New Links

Tammy and Shelby were out making a 'snowwoman' today. Here is a picture of their masterpiece.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Also, note that I have added several new links to the "blogs" section to the right.

Presidents Day Celebration

Happy Presidents Day! I just love Presidents Day. I don’t know about your home but in our home we just love the traditions that we enjoy each and every year. This is the time of year that I dress up as Abraham Lincoln (black beard, tall top hat, long black coat…). Once I am completely in character I march around the house shouting at the top of my lungs: “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation!” (That’s all I know, so I just repeat that phrase over and over). Tammy dresses up as Mary Todd Lincoln and spends the afternoon in the kitchen baking apple pies. Of course I avoid the theatre like the plague – I’m not stupid you know.

In the evening we decorate a cherry tree with 43 ornaments, one for each of the presidents. Once the 3 of us have gathered around the tree we have a meal consisting of hot dogs and apple pie and I read from each and every State of the Union ever given… we don’t exchange gifts though, we like to keep it simple.

Becoming a Church with Velocity Part 4

I just got back from speaking up at Dewart Lake Community Friends Church. I think things went well this evening, I got some great feedback from those who were there this evening and we had a good time "unpacking" what it might look like for a church to be a "movement" rather than an "institution".

One of the things that I always enjoy talking about is change. And so tonight I talked about the fact that in order to become a church with velocity we need to be able to adapt to our ever changing culture.

We wouldn’t expect missionaries to go oversees and change the culture in which they find themselves. We wouldn't expect the missionaries to force the indigenous group to wear our clothes, sing our songs, and to begin to speak English. We would expect missionaries to go and study/exegete (word for the day) their culture and to find ways to bridge that culture with the timeless truth of God’s Word. Somehow we tend to forget that we are missionaries in our own culture and it requires that we “learn the language” of our contemporary culture in order to communicate God’s Word effectively.

Adapting to our culture means that the church is going to have to change in its methods or approach in reaching the people within its ministry context. In the natural world adaptation is the difference between living and dying, and I believe it is the same for the church as well. Our message does not change but the methods of delivering that message must always be evaluated in light of the culture or sub culture we find ourselves in. The fact is, our culture is fluid and it changes; and in recent history change happens faster than ever before. Obviously changes happen at different rates even within America; I guarantee the West Coast is changing at a far more rapid rate than what we are experiencing in Farmland, Indiana.

Erwin McManus says, Communities around many churches have changed dramatically, yet the church has stayed the same. And while the transition has been taking place the local congregation has either been unaware or unconcerned.

Too often we are more concerned about preserving our traditions and preferences than making the changes necessary to communicate effectively with a generation that is lost and going to hell.

Change needs to occur to thrive; God wants us to remember what He has done, but He demands that we not live in the past Isa. 43:18, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See I am doing a new thing!” Our memories of God’s activity in our past are to move us into the future.

We serve the changeless God of change. He is the God of creativity, imagination, and revolution. When traditions trap us in the past, they stifle the imagination, bring an end to creativity, and make innovation impossible.

While God instructs His people over and over again to remember all his great deeds, He doesn’t call us to live in the past. As Erwin McManus says, We must leave the past, engage the present, and create the future.

Becoming a Church with Velocity Part 3

I think churches fall into one of two camps: Surviving or Thriving. A thriving church has the life blood of Jesus Christ in it. A thriving church is passionate about the things that are on the heart of God. The heart of Jesus is to seek and to save the lost and when the church’s heart is not beating with the heartbeat of Christ then you might as well hook it up to life support. A surviving church is just trying to keep the doors of the church open.

I’ve grown up going to church and most of the churches I have been in you could label as “surviving churches”. There was not much passion, nobody ever got healed, not many were getting saved, nothing ever really happened there. Most of the time the folks were just playing church. You had to be perfect or pretend to be perfect to fit in with all of the other people who were just playing church.

Here are some qualities of a surviving church.

1. The surviving church: strives to keep the members happy. I’ve heard Perry Noble (pastor of NewSpring Church) say, “We lose steeple people all the time” People will tell him, “In my former church we did this or that” He’d say, “Well maybe you need to go back to your former church.” He also said that he hears people talking about closing the backdoor of the church. He said, “We don’t need to close the backdoor of the church. The church is the body of Christ you go closing the back door of the body… Some churches are spiritually constipated.”

You reach the unsaved and you’ll offend the Pharisees. You do church “not as usual” and the religious folks will get bent out of shape. Trying to please everyone will divert the true focus of the local church.

2. The surviving church: avoids controversial issues. If you want to sap the life out of the church avoid certain topics found in the Bible, don’t talk about sin, don’t challenge people, play the politics game…

3. The surviving church: remains cautious. In the surviving church you hear their rally cry, “We’ve never done it that way before.” “Let’s not stretch our faith. Let’s just survive. Let’s just make sure the doors stay open.”

God never intended His church just to survive. God calls us to be a thriving church. Jesus said I have overcome the world and He gave us His Spirit. Too often we act like we are just trying to survive this world and we forget that we are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ.

Becoming a Church with Velocity Part 2

Among the things that I will be sharing in my message at Dewart Lake Friends Church are these thoughts from Erwin McManus’ book An Unstoppable Force.

The formula for momentum is P=MV2 .

P = momentum
M = mass
V = velocity

In the church mass = people; without people there is no momentum.

Mass is threatening to some – some believe that smaller is always better. Some people want the church to stay small. It’s true that bigger is not always better. The size of the mass does not always provide momentum. God knows that mass doesn’t equal momentum – In Judges 7 Gideon was concerned about mass but God was focused on momentum.

God also doesn’t believe that big is bad. Gen. 15, “Look up at the heavens and count the stars – if indeed you can count them, so shall your offspring be.”

Without mass you have no movement; but if there’s no velocity, there is no momentum either.

Velocity = vision and mission. When people are moving together with a common purpose and vision momentum can happen. Without a vision and a mission you’ve just got a bunch of people You can have a stadium full of people at the Colts game but they aren’t going anywhere. You need both mass and velocity for momentum. If you are missing mass or velocity you get 0 (nothing).

When the church has a vision and is moving on mission with God then you have momentum. It is mission and vision (Velocity) that provides the momentum of a thriving church.

Becoming a Church with Velocity

This Sunday evening I will be traveling to Syracuse, Indiana to the Dewart Lake Friends Church for a speaking engagement. I’ve been invited to share some thoughts from a workshop that I did last October at the “Day of Healing Conference” called “Becoming a Church with Velocity: from surviving to thriving”. I’m looking forward to sharing some insights with their congregation and engaging in some dialogue about the mission/purpose/direction of the local church. I may share in the next few posts some of the things that I will be sharing with their congregation.

Fire Alarm

Well it happened again. We had to call the Farmland Fire Department for the 2nd time. You can read about the first time they came out here. This time the fire alarm went off inside the building and we called the Fire Department immediately. Our alarm system indicated right where the problem was at but when the firemen went to find the issue they didn't find anything. We believe it is just an electrical issue and we have some folks coming to check it in the morning.

One of the benefits of the "Blizzard of 07" was that it gave me an opportunity to brush up on my hamster flying skills - 2332 feet!

Blizzard of 2007, Part Deux

Here are some more photos from around our house.

Here is the drift at our patio door. It actually shrunk some because the wind blew away some of what had built up yesterday morning.

This is our bedroom window...

Here is the snow piled up from our driveway...

They had to call out the big guns to plow out our "street" (We are in the town of Parker City, but this is still a gravel road. Since we are right next to a field we get lots of drifting.)

This is my favorite picture. This is a view from the mountain of snow that came off our driveway...

Blizzard of 2007

Here's a photo of what we woke up to this morning out our patio window.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I took this photo at 9:00 a.m. There is about 2 foot from the ground to the bottom of this patior door so this is almost a 5 foot tall drift.

The snow is still coming down and the wind is blowing nice and hard still. I used to live for days like this when I was a kid. I would pray for blizzards so I wouldn't have to go to school. Unfortunately, we always had to make up the snow days in the spring. There always seems to be a balance between work and play.

I still enjoy a good blizzard (althogh I don't pray for them to occur anymore). In just a little bit I'll get the joy of going out and shoveling the drive way (work) and even though I didn't go into the office today I still needed to get my work done... Wait a minute - where'd the play go?

Lotsa' Snow & Memories of Home

It sounds like we've got a large snow storm on the way. Someone mentioned this evening that it may be as big as the Blizzard of '78. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ind/blizzardof78.php.

Tammy loves the snow. Tammy and I are from Northern Iowa and are used to plenty of cold and snow in the winter.

Here are some links to our home town for those who are curious or just super bored... Mason City, Iowa

I can take you down some more of my memory lane and link you to some other places in our history...

Kris’ High School - North Central - Manly, Iowa (Class of '89) – Falcons rock by the way!

Tammy's High School - Northwood/Kensett - Northwood, Iowa (Class of '89) - Home of the Vikings.

Kris' Junior College - NIACC

Kris' first 4 year college - Pitt State University - Home of the Gorillas. (Intended major Psychology & Physical Education)

Tammy's favorite hang-out while living in the "Four States" (Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma). We lived in Joplin, MO. for a while.

Our home church in Kansas - Riverton Friends Church

Kris' Bible College - Barclay College - Haviland, Kansas. Great memories there. If you are looking for a Bible college be sure to look into their free tuition scholarship.

Kris' Seminary - Luther Rice University - I was so happy to get my Masters completed last year.
The last 5 1/2 years have now been here - Farmland, Indiana at the Farmland Friends church.
There you have it a stroll down memory lane.

Lesson in a Bag

This morning at church Ryan McAllister, our 2nd service worship leader, came up with a great idea called "lesson in a bag". I got a paper bag and ran around the sanctuary at the start of service and collected items from people to place in the bag. (Some of our folks have some really odd items in their pockets and purses). Once I had collected the items Ryan reached into the bag and pulled out an item and had to give a Bible lesson on that object. Today he pulled out hand lotion and talked about the healing power of God in our lives.

This was a very different way to begin the service but it really got people engaged right away in the service so I think we will try it again in the near future. Who knows maybe we will get something in the bag that will completely stump Ryan.

Any thoughts on items we could place in the bag to throw Ryan off? Leave a comment and share your ideas...

Control

The message tomorrow at church will be about "Control". The point that I'll be trying to get across is that fear fuels control. We may be afraid of how people will perceive us so we will try to control everything and everyone around us. An excellent case study in control is Bree Van DeKamp on the TV show Desperate Housewives - major control issues. Check out this clip from the TV show...

Taxes - Aaargh!

I've been working on my taxes and my brain needs a break. Looking through all these forms and reading each line has reminded me how thankful I am that as a Christian I am not bound by the Old Covenant Law. I am so frustrated with all these tax forms; I've found myself jumping from one page to another, filling in one line here and making sure I put the same number on a different line on a different form, working on "long form" worksheets - it's enough to drive me nuts. If my faith were based on the law I would have to loose my religion.

Romans 10:4, "Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes."

Spiritual Day Off

Today I re-entered the land of the living after having a wonderful experience with the flu the past couple of days. It felt so good to shave, take a shower, and get out of the house for my "spiritual day off". I spent my day at several different places: 1. Wal-Mart (had to get new tires). Worked on the first message in an upcoming series "Margin$". 2. Second stop was - Starbucks. I met Tammy and Shelby there and enjoyed some quality time talking about the future. By the way our Starbucks really needs to get WiFi. So without the use of the internet I had to go old school and read off of a printed page. Tammy brought me the latest REV magazine. Much of the magazine had to deal with the issue of control - the topic of this Sunday's sermon. 3. Third stop in my pilgrimage today was Panera. They have free WiFi (are you listening Starbucks!).

By the way: if you live in the area, I would encourage you to make your way to church tonight and every Thursday evening for the next several weeks to hear Debbie Howell teach on the topic of "Offense"; I thought about just calling the people who I thought really need to be there but they would get offended =)

Awesome! I Got the Flu!

Last night I had the wonderful privilege of experiencing the latest flu bug (*read that dripping with sarcasm*); it was not a pretty sight. Today was spent at home napping and monitoring my email.

On a completely different note Shelby saw her Daddy's face on a “My Little Pony” and immediately wanted to be on one too. She told Tammy that she thought she would make a “much prettier pony than Daddy” – I agree. For more fun check out the dress up going on over at onedumbsheep.

100th Post!

This is my 100th post on this blog. I started posting back on Nov. 14, 2006. Checking with my "sitemeter" I've discovered that I've had guests visit this blog from almost every state in the U.S. (except AL, LA, NE, WY, SD, UT, NM). I've had people pop in from China, Venezuela, Australia, and Italy. Many of these may get here as a result of blogger randomly sending them to my sight, others are friends and family in other states. A few people leave comments but many others are just stopping by to see what's up in the life of our family and church. Many of you have stopped me at church and made comments about what you have read on the blog and to encourage me; I want to thank each of you for being a part of this blog.

I thought I'd look back over the last 99 posts and get a feel for where I've been and what this blog actually looks like.

This is a very random blog; I've purposely mixed in some devotional thoughts as well as just light hearted fun. I want to keep people on their toes and keep the blog from bogging down in the same old topic of conversation. I found some random recurring themes that seem to pop up from time to time: Flying Hamsters, My Little Pony, and "Word of the Day". (I have a feeling these and other odd themes will continue to make appearances from time to time.)

Here is a list of some of my favorite posts:

Creativity

My soon to be 4 year old daughter, Shelby, is at the age where she is putting together some very interesting clothing choices. It doesn’t stop with her questionable choice of mismatched outfits she wants to impose her tastes on me as well. She has it in her mind that I should dress up as a “My Little Pony” for her birthday party. I love my daughter but I refuse to dress up as a “My Little Pony”. It seems that her meal choices can be as eclectic (word for the day) as her clothing choices. This evening she had waffles and stove top stuffing – mmmm yummy.

Isn’t it amazing how creative children can be? Something happens to our creativity as we age; we seem to get a bit more “domesticated”. At some point we seem to lose our inhibitions and creativity takes a hike. I find myself saying “Man, I wish I were more creative”. Maybe you’ve said the same kind of thing before. The truth is – we are creative; it is just a matter of tapping back into what the world has tried to drive out of us ever since we were children.

I’m thinking I need to allow myself a bit more space to dream and think outside of the box. My thinking has become too predictable, too linear, too “domesticated”. I’m going to give myself permission to dream once again. You should give it a shot too…

I’m still not going to dress up as a “My Little Pony” for her party though.

Dentists and Religion

This afternoon I had my semi-annual dentist appointment. I don’t know if you do this, but before I went to the dentist I brushed my teeth and I flossed. Do you do that? Now that’s not such a big deal except this was the 2nd time I had brushed my teeth today and I don’t floss regularly. (I know, shame on me.)

As I am brushing and flossing my teeth to get them clean so that I can go to the dentist to get them cleaned once again I was thinking to myself, ‘how many people do this with God?’ How often do people think that they need to clean up their act before they return to God? I had a person tell me recently that they need to straighten out their life before they come to church. God didn’t come for the cleaned up and the righteous. Sometimes we think that it is our job to do the refining and the cleaning up when that is not our job at all. Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” Leave the cleaning and polishing to the Great Physician.

Forget the Commercials - The Colts Win the Super Bowl!!!

The Colts did it! What a great season!

Romans 12:15 says to "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn."

I'm rejoicing with my fellow Colts fans and mourning with the (few) friends that I have that are Bears fans.

Any comments on the game???? Feel free to post a comment.

Super Bowl Commercials - 3rd Quarter

I thought the 3rd Quarter commercials were a little thin. I liked the careerbuilder.com commercial with all the office employs battling it out in the jungle (I couldn't find the video on the web). I also liked the Taco Bell commercial with the two lions you can check out that commercial on Taco Bell's website at the bottom of the page.

I was a little worried about the Colts in the first quarter. They are starting to worry me now in the beginning of the fourth quarter.

People are High-Tailing It Out of Indiana

I picked this up from churchrelevance.com the other day...

United Van Lines conducted a migration study in 2006 and discovered that Americans are leaving the central northeast and heading west and southeast.

Top Growing States (percentage of moves coming inbound)
64.0% - North Carolina
62.5% - Oregon
60.6% - South Carolina
59.9% - Nevada
59.3% - Idaho
57.9% - New Mexico
57.9% - Washington, D.C.

Top Shrinking States (percentage of moves going outbound)
66.0% - Michigan
66.0% - North Dakota
60.9% - New Jersey
59.5% - New York
58.2% - Indiana
57.0% - Pennsylvania
56.4% - Louisiana

I think I know one of the reasons that people are leaving Indiana. It's cold! I just checked weather.com and the temperature is 8 degrees with a windchill of -7.

More Thoughts on the Big Game

Wow! 3 posts in one day – that may be a new record for me.

Anytime you have the LA Times calling Farmland Friends Church you know a story has hit the news hard. And you know why this is news don’t you? Because churches have been having super bo-l parties for years and now the NFL has chosen to single out one particular church in Indianapolis! Of all places (Indy) and of all the times (it’s not like the Colts do this regularly:-).

Just type “superbowl party church” into google and see how many churches have planned superb-wl parties at their churches. This is nothing new churches have been doing this for years. I don’t think many of them knew/know that the NFL frowns upon it either. I’d still like it if someone could direct me to the legalese that the NFL is refereeing to in their letter to Pastor Newland at Fall Creek Baptist Church.

We (FFC) had no idea that legally we are not allowed to show the big game on our big screen. But once you have knowledge of something that then makes you responsible for that knowledge. That is why, in good conscience and as representatives of Christ, we could not break the law.

Here are just some of the 1,590,000 links from the google search I mentioned earlier…

Evidently someone in Christendom has written a manual on how to throw a church super b-wl party. http://www.floridabaptistwitness.com/3720.article

I try not to listen in on other people's conversations; but there are folks that talk so loud you can't help but hear what they are saying. Today I slipped into Starbucks and overheard a young lady say, "I want to be a hippie so bad - I just don't want to give up my materialism... Yeah, I'm a 'maximulist'." ("coined" word for the day)

I love honest people; and now I have a brand new word for my vocabulary.

LA Times, NFL, & FFC

The LA Times is going to be doing an article tomorrow on churches that are canceling their Super Bow_ parties (oops almost wrote that whole trademark out - yeah I'm still a little annoyed). You say, "Kris, how do you know what the LA Times is writing tomorrow?" Because a reporter from the Times called the church today to interview someone in the know. They wanted to speak with our Outreach Pastor, Jeff Pfohl, but Jeff was out of the office so Jenny Lee (Bookkepper/Secretary) shared a few thoughts with the reporter.

That is so stinkin' sweeeet! The LA Times called the Farmland Friends Church (FFC) and we may make their article. Even if they just mention our churches name that's excititng. When you live in the middle of farm country with maybe 1,700 people in your town - this is big news. The LA Times must have picked the story up from The Star Press out of Muncie, IN. The Star will be running an article too tomorrow, I've been told.

I'll try to remember to post links when they get their articles written.

No S_P_R B_W_ Party this Sunday

It looks like the NFL has thrown a penalty flag on churches that might like to broadcast the S-P-R B-W- in their churches. I can’t spell the whole word, it is a trademark of the NFL and I can’t use it. If I sound a little bitter it’s because I am. Because of legal reasons we have cancelled our outreach for this Sunday evening.

I’ve been receiving emails and phone calls from folks this evening who watched the news on WTHR (channel 13 out of Indy). The news channel aired a story about how the NFL is coming down hard on the Fall Creek Baptist Church of Indianapolis because they were planning a Sup _ _ Bow_ outreach. (Here is a link to this story on the web.)

I have yet to read the fine print of the NFL; if anyone has a link to the legalese I’d love to read it. I had no idea you couldn’t show the Supe_ _owl on a screen no bigger than 55 inches, I also had no idea that the term Su_er Bo__ was a trademark and you can’t use that term. However if you would like to watch the game on a large screen with a group of people you may do so at the bar – but not at the church.

Here’s the flip side of all of this. We had planned on using this event as an outreach for our friends and family members to invite those who don't have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. My encouragement to you now is to watch the game at your "unsaved/unconvinced/pre-Christian" friends home or have them over to your place (but you better not have a 60 inch TV – I’m still a little bitter). The goal has always been to show love and to provide a bridge to those who don’t now Christ and that can be done just as well (if not better) in our homes.

Staff Bonding Time

This afternoon a few of us pastors took some time out to have some fun. Pastor Marggy (Pastor of Administration) and I took on Bryan Vickery (Youth Pastor) in a video game. Not just any video game; NBA 2K7 on the Playstation 3. I would love to be able to tell you that Pastor Marggy and I dominated but that would be a lie. Heavy B beat us by 11 points.

I love having staff to bond with. Marggy and I are formulating some plans to take a "mini" pastoral staff retreat latter this spring. I think it is crucial that our team be able to get along and enjoy one another beyond just the typical ministry moments (even if it means I get beat in NBA 2K7) =)
