Opening Up My Inerds

(Preface - I'm not looking for compliments or even encouragement with this blog post, I'm simply letting you into my world because that's the purpose of this blog.)

I've heard from lots of folks regarding last Sunday's services and they had great things to say about their sense of God's presence and their experience from this weekend. I walked away praising God for the way he used everyone else... except for me. There are moments when I preach that I realize, "something is not clicking here". There were moments during the message when I thought "you're just not connecting here". There is this sense that pastor's have from time to time in which after preaching they feel like crap - like they could have done better - that was my sense this Sunday.

I then try to evaluate why I have this sense: did I not pray enough, is this just the enemy trying to pull me down, did I not prepare enough, do I lack passion, is the topic confusing and not being explained clearly, am I giving too much information, am I just being insecure? Am I out of sync because we no longer have a Saturday night service which helped me prepare for Sunday morning, am I paying too much attention to the crying baby, do I lack eye contact, am I speaking too fast, how was my vocal inflection? And on and on and on...

Here's what I always come to after all of those thoughts and evaluation... that service wasn't about Kris and his feelings, that service was all about God and His glory. I long for God's unction as I preach, and I long to make a difference in the lives of those who will hear the message - but the problem comes when I begin desiring those things to make myself feel good rather than make God's name famous.

When my sole passion is bringing glory to God and to give Him my best, He will take care of the rest.

I'm Blessed

I was thinking tonight about how blessed I am. I could create a very long list of the blessings that God has allowed me to experience, i.e. salvation through Jesus Christ, health, loving family, income, a home, 2 cars, a meaningful profession, fantastic good looks, and superb humility ;-)

Then I began thinking about what I've done to earn these blessings from God... nothing. I am blessed more than I deserve. God doesn't owe me any of these things, they are not my right. What I deserved is judgment instead God has shown me mercy and grace. Not because of how great I am, but because of how great He is.

Having this understanding allows me to look at the blessings the way I believe God would have me. The blessings I've experienced are to be used to bring Him more glory; not more glory for myself. My blessings are to be leveraged for His Kingdom not my own.

What have you been blessed with? How will you use those blessings to make the name of God praised by those who are less fortunate than you?

"I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy." Romans 9:15, 16

A Changed Life

I received a very encouraging email yesterday. Remember the Divine Appointment that I had last month? A gentleman that I hadn't met before found his way to my office and by the end of the conversation he had given his life to Jesus Christ. I asked you to pray that he would keep taking "the next right step". Your prayers are being answered, I received this email from him yesterday.

"I have been [free from my addiction] for a month now and I plan on [keeping it that way]. Church, work, and [my girlfriend] have all played a vital role in my recovery and I am very grateful. You do not know how much you have done for me. I check your blog daily. I read the daily writings in simplywait and I have signed up for the daily bible readings. I am now on my second day. I will be finished in a year. Thank you for the great advice. "

I love it when God changes a life! As a church we get the privilege of being used by God, it is God, however, that makes the internal and eternal changes in a life. Please keep praying for my new friend; as you well know our journey of faith can get bumpy at times and he will need all the support he can get. I'm so privileged to be a part of a church community that values changed lives.

Death and Taxes... I Choose Death

Benjamin Franklin said, "In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes." Fortunately I'll only have to die once - my taxes however I have to do over and over and over. I think I prefer death at this point.

OK I just got "official" word and I can spill the beans. We have a "Compassion Sunday" planned for Sunday, April 20th and we have scheduled Shaun Groves to be our guest speaker/singer/inspirer (I made that last word up). For those that may not know, Shaun is an excellent musician and communicator; we are very fortunate to have him come and share his passion about Compassion. The Grand Canyon Vs. Our Greatness

Recently I completed reading John Piper's "Don't Waste Your Life" here is one of the many quotes I enjoyed from his book...

"The really wonderful moments of joy in this world are not the moments of self-satisfaction, but self-forgetfulness. Standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon and contemplating your own greatness is pathological. At such moments we are made for a magnificent joy that comes from outside ourselves. And each of these rare and precious moments in life – beside the Canyon, before the Alps, under the stars – is an echo of a far greater excellence, namely, the glory of God."

Sorry for how dark these pictures are. You can't see it real well, but this is the trusses for the ceiling and concrete in our outreach center. Reflections On Week 1 Of "Wait"

I’ve had great feedback so far about our first week of Wait. I have high expectations during this message series. My prayer for several weeks now has been that people would find freedom over their temptations and the things that have been tripping them up for years now would no longer be a stumbling block.

Unfortunately, as long as we are in our fleshly body, temptation will never go away, but that doesn’t mean that we have to give-in to those temptations. Sin does not have to be our master any longer (Rom. 6:14). Jesus Christ has come not only to pay the penalty for our sin but to break the power of sin in our lives now!

I scored some great candy this afternoon. Tammy and Shelby picked up half priced peeps and Cadbury mini eggs at Target!

The brown peeps are cocoa flavored... what will they think of next?

Scary Easter Bunnies

I don't think you can make a gigantic bunny that doesn't look scary. Which of these Easter Bunnies would you least like to meet in a dark alley? Bunny #1 - #2 - #3 -#4?

Like Father Like Son

Today our family got together to enjoy our Easter meal at a restaurant. When you have three pastors in the family you have to do your holidays a little different than most people... we tend to be a little busy on the weekends. After our meal I was outside joking around with my dad and teasing him; I shouldn't have been teasing him, he had just dropped a chunk of change on a great meal for all of us (I know shame on me). My sister, Yvette, recorded a little bit of our silliness. You can clearly see I look and sound like my dad... obviously he is a very handsome man as well ;-)

By the way, my dad is holding one of his 4 grandkids, Tegan Oren.

Don't Waste Your Life

Currently I'm reading "Don't Waste Your Life" by John Piper; I'm about half way through the book and I am really enjoying it. I think I could give you a pretty good summary of the first portion of the book by quoting from page 31:

"God created me - and you - to live with a single, all embracing,
all-transforming passion - namely, a passion to glorify God by enjoying and
displaying his supreme excellence in all the spheres of life... The wasted life
is the life without a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy
of all peoples."

"Don't Waste Your Life" is a very motivating reminder to die to self and to boast only in the cross of Christ (Galatians 6:14)

Ummm - Easter Is This Weekend

Considering the fiasco of people not setting their clocks correctly a couple of weeks ago, it feels like I need to give a little reminder... This weekend is EASTER! I know, crazy huh? March 23rd? Are you kidding me?

As I've mentioned before I will be preaching on temptation and I'm calling the series WAIT. I am anticipating some great things happening in the lives of those in our congregation. I want so badly for those that I shepherd not to get devoured by the temptations of this life. No one can deny that temptation seems to be around every corner, that is why it is so crucial that we tap into the power of the Holy Spirit and develop the skills necessary to say, "no" to temptation. There is always so much more at stake than just the immediate temptation in front of us. Swing by http://www.simplywait.com/ for more encouragement.

Could You Do Me A Favor...

Tomorrow (March 19th) is Tammy's birthday and she will be 3___ (pick a number). Unfortunately, I can't be with her most of the day since I am in Indianapolis for a meeting.... I know what you're thinking, "how insensitive to not be with your wife on her birthday", don't worry I earned some brownie points with her gift this year. Tammy's mother and I chipped in together and we got her a "humdinger" this year.

Could you do me a favor and swing by her blog today and wish her a happy birthday? I sure would appreciate it. If you can't swing by and comment you could just send money... that would be nice too ;-)

You can check out her blog HERE... The Preacher's Wife

Busy Evening

I've got to get this post in quickly I've got a full evening in front of me. Our college growth group is gathering a little earlier than normal so that we can get into Muncie and feed some homeless individuals through Christian Ministries.

Once we are done in Muncie I need to make my way into Indianapolis to get to my parents home to stay the night. Tomorrow morning I will be listening to the president of Bible League share what is going on in their ministry.

HGTV Dream Home - How Would You React?

Here's a video clip from last nights HGTV Dream Home Giveaway. Tammy got a 25 minute speech from me last night when I watched this ladies reaction. I know everyone respond differently - I just don't think I know very many people that would respond the way this lady did.

As I started to think about my reaction to her response, I started wondering about how I respond to the blessings of God in my life. Too often I think I don't express my gratitude appropriately. I wonder if God is a little disappointed with us when we respond so nonchalantly to the blessing of His grace?

How would you react if you just won a home worth 2.2 million dollars?

Random Thoughts

  • I thought Ryan McAllister did an excellent job filling the pulpit this weekend - he's a great preacher. His message on gossip/sin hit a cord and many people responded. I think he set the tone perfectly for our upcoming series on temptation.
  • The Holy Spirit was working big time on a number of people this weekend and I was fortunate enough to see it.
  • I'm super excited about beginning our new series on temptation called, "Wait". I think what will learn together has the potential to alter our lives in a big way.
  • The http://www.simplywait.com/ website will be updated much more often beginning this week.
  • I'm sitting here watching the HGTV Dream Home giveaway. I registered to win this home religiously. I'm going to be bummed if I don't get a knock at more door tonight and see a television crew. I wouldn't mind having a vacation home in Florida on the beach in the Florida Keys ;-) You can come over if I win; we can chill listening to the ocean waves eating key lime pie and sipping on sweet tea.

It's rare that I would let you see my private photo collection but here it goes...
