Most Memorable Superbowl

Tomorrow night is the big night; Superbowl XLIII. Please don't tell the NFL, but, I plan on watching the game up in "The 3:7" youth room at church, or as I like to call it, "the man cave". I don't think that I have ever watched the Superbowl alone. Every year I gather with friends from the church at their homes, or even at the church with friends, to watch the final football game of the season. Some of those nights are memorable, others are not.

My most memorable Superbowl gathering was XXXVIII - emphasis on the XXX , if you recall. I found myself sitting in the living room with several respectable, God loving, young couples (names withheld - - your welcome) watching the half-time show. Then it happened, we saw more of Janet Jackson than we had anticipated in prime-time television. Awwwwkward. We sat there for a moment stunned at what just happened. I started to think "What do I do? Do I give a sermon here? Do I quote passages? Do I get mad? Do I start praying for Janet? Do I pretend I wasn't watching at that moment?" I felt the awkwardness of the situation, I mean it's bad enough to see that - but when the pastor is in your living room, it's on a whole-nutha-level. Honestly I don't remember who spoke first, or even what was said, I was still in shock.

All I'm saying is, this year Bruce Springsteen better keep his top on.

It has happened again; another FFC peep has succumbed to the peer pressure and has begun blogging, Aaron Black has moved to the neighborhood. Be sure to stop by his place and welcome him to our neck of the cyber woods.

One Month To Live

I've been working on the new message series, "Carpe Diem"; which of course loosely means, "seize the day". I think we become keenly aware of how quickly time passes the older we get. This year marks my 20 year high school class reunion, and I think to myself, "Stink! I've gotten old - quick!" If we are not careful, life can pass us by without truly seizing the moments to glorify God and to enjoy the day we have been given.

It is sad, but true, some people never really start living until they realize that they are close to dying. That raises a question in my mind that I thought I'd throw out there this evening; I'd love to know your response to this question...

What would you do if you knew you only had one month to live?...

Coming Soon To FFC

“Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath." Psalm 39:4-5

Tuesday Is For Randomness

Some random thoughts on this Tuesday evening:

I am so glad to have Tammy and Shelby back home. Two weeks apart was plenty. The beauty of the two weeks apart though was the fact that both of us were in our preferred element: I love the warmth of the Caribbean and Tammy prefers the cold arctic blast of Northern Iowa

I'm looking forward to our next sermon series at FFC. I'm calling it "Carpe Diem" and we will be talking about making the most out of the lives that God has given us. I'm praying that this series will stir us out of any complacency we may have found ourselves in.

Our mission team saw Vana White at the Jamaica airport, some of them got photos and autographs. I left her alone - because that's what I would have wanted from me (golden rule).

I had over 200 blog posts in Google Reader to catch up on when I returned from our mission trip. I still have 100 posts to read. Yikes!

Sunday's services blew me away. Both the 9AM & 10:45AM service were filled with the Lord's presence.

Pastor Pink and I will be traveling with CSI to Ireland March 13-21. We will be scouting out mission work for our youth to be involved with in 2010. My brother-in-law Ronn Oren will be on this trip as well. I'm really looking forward to going on this mission trip; interestingly, we will be in Ireland during St. Patrick's day.

If you are interested in joining our team in Jamaica we will be traveling January 9-16th of 2010. I challenged our church to send 20 people on this next trip.

I bet you'd like to see some pictures from Jamaica... here's one...

Back From Jamaica

I'm trying to get caught up tonight with all the emails and blogs I missed over the past week while our team was in Jamaica. The mission experience was absolutely great; we had no major problems, and I don't think any of us would trad the experience for anything. I may try to put more of my thoughts together as the week goes on. Right now my mind is a little spent from the mission trip and a couple of very emotional services this morning.

Nathan Harris and Brian Cline put together a fantastic video of our mission trip; check it out.

Confession #7

I was probably 20 years old and had cut my tongue numerous times before I realized that you don't lick the glue on an envelope sideways; you lick up. I haven't cut my tongue for several years now.

My sister watched Goonies like 93 times (or something like that). If I never see the Goonies again in my life or hear Cyndi Lauper sing again; that will be "good enough for me". =)

Mission Trip

This morning we are on our way to Jamaica for our short-term mission trip. When I go on these trips I often think of Jim Elliot's quote...

"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." Jim Elliot

Jim believed that mission work was more important than his own life.

....................
I will be away from the blog for a week but posts are scheduled to come up each day that I'm gone. If you think of it you can pray for our team as we minister to folks on this short trip.

This Cold Weather Stinketh

It's official; I really, really, don't like the Midwest or anywhere north of the Midwest. This cold weather is punching me in the gut.

I had a very interesting evening last night and thought I'd share some of the details with you. The best way to fill you in is to copy and paste the email that I sent to my wife who is visiting her mom up in Iowa. Here is some of what I wrote her...

"Our water wasn't working this evening (10:30 p.m.) so I bundled up to go into the crawl space to try and unthaw our pipes, but the crawl space was flooded with about 5 inches of water. So I can't get down there to do anything. I called the police department at midnight and they got the city worker and drove him over to shut off our 'main' at the meter. (I had to shovel the lawn in order to find the meter!) I have no idea if the water is from a busted pipe or not - when the city worker came to shut off the meter I had him look to see if the meter was running ... and it was not running. If it were running it would mean that there was a busted pipe that was still leaking. Right now it is a mystery. I will call (a plumber) tomorrow to come and try to solve the mystery. Tomorrow is supposed to be colder than today and I leave early Saturday morning (for Jamaica)... so our water may be off for over a week; but it is better to have it off at the main than risk it unthawing while I'm away and causing HUGE damage."

I then proceeded to tell her how cold and miserable I was. -20 to -30 degrees with windchill had pushed me to the limit. I've seen too many bitterly cold winters in my short lifetime.

Here's the beauty of it though, tomorrow I will be enjoying a 100 degree temperature shift as we go on our mission trip to Jamaica... God is good!

"Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." Ps.37:3-5

My desire is to experience a warmer climate - amen.

Travel Plans

Tomorrow morning I am getting up before the roosters in order to take Tammy and Shelby to the Indianapolis airport. They will be heading up to "Grandma J's" house in Northern Iowa for a couple of weeks. I will be heading for 80 degree weather in Jamaica and Tammy is heading into negative temperatures and lots of snow. Believe it or not, both of us will be in our element; I love warmer weather (because I'm sane) and Tammy loves the cold and snow.

I'm going to miss Tammy and Shelby, fortunately, I will be busy on the mission trip for a good portion of our time apart.

Jamaica Mission 09

In less than a week I, and 9 others, from FFC will be on a plane heading to Jamaica to make a difference in the life of a family that desperately needs a roof over their heads. This will be my third mission trip to Jamaica, so I have some idea what to expect now, and there are so many things that I'm looking forward to.

Here is my short list: warmer weather :-), friendly Jamaicans, fantastic missionary hosts, jerk chicken, beautiful scenery, the sound of the ocean, the smiles on the faces of the family that receives a new home, sharing the love of Christ with others, watching each person on our team affected by the experience.

Leadership Quote - Susan B. Anthony

Cautious, careful people, always casting about to preserve their reputation and social standing, never can bring about a reform. Those who are really in earnest must be willing to be anything or nothing in the world's estimation, and publicly and privately, in season and out, avow their sympathy with despised and persecuted ideas and their advocates, and bear the consequences.Susan B. Anthony

Pray For Peace

My devotions this morning brought me to Psalm 122 where I read these appropriate words for today, "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels." For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, "Peace be within you." For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your prosperity." Psalm 122:6-9

Leadership Quote - Peter Drucker

"The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say 'I'. And that's not because they have trained themselves not to say 'I'. They don't think 'I". They think 'we'; they think 'team'. They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don't sidestep it, but 'we' get the credit. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done." Peter Drucker

Daily Bible Reading

Sunday at church I encouraged people to get into a routine of reading the Bible and doing devotions every day. Now is a great time to start the new year right and get into the habit of reading your Bible. I told people how I went about my devotions utilizing the internet and that if they needed the website to just email me. I've had several requests so I thought I'd just go ahead and post the site I use here on the blog as well.

Here is the website that I use for my daily Bible reading... http://bible.christianity.com/

This site has a lot of great resources, including devotionals and study resources, but I primarily use it for the Bible in a Year feature. Here is a screen shot...
Once I created a free account, I then set up the reading plan that I wanted and translation of the Bible that I wanted to read.  I made that page my homepage/start page, that way every time I log onto the internet in the morning this is the first thing that I see. It takes me about 15 minutes to read the passage and then I click the "finished reading" tab and the next day pops up and is ready the next time I open up my web browser.

I began using this site last February, so in about a month I will have read through the Bible in one straight shot. My plan is to begin again with a new Bible in a year plan but reading from a different translation.

If I had a handy dandy iPhone or web enabled cell phone I'd be all over the youversion Bible like white on rice. But for easy navigation and added features on the computer bible.christianity.com is my choice.

What do ya'll use for your daily devotions/Bible reading?

3 wireless video game systems on flat screen TV's (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3)
Stage (sound and lighting coming soon)
Coffee shop (Frappucinos, lattes sodas, hot dogs, popcorn, etc.)
Flat screen TV playing Christian videos
2 HP touch screen computers
Foosball table
Pool table
Ping Pong table
Dart board
Christian Magazines
A glow in the dark restroom (you read that right; glow paint + black light = glow in the dark restroom)
Kickin' colors
& Over 60 kids with eternal souls, and many more students on the way.

Congratulations to Pastor Pink and his team of volunteers that have ministered to these students week after week. May this space see the salvation of many young people for years to come!

Halftime

It's halftime of the Colts/Chargers game and I thought I'd throw a quick blog post up. We are watching the game this evening at the church on 3 very large screens. A majority of the people here this evening are in Jr. High and High School; I really enjoy hanging out with the youth and adults from our church.

FYI: tomorrow night (Jan. 4th) our spanking new youth room officially opens for the youth group. The environment that Pastor Pink has put together for the youth is amazing. It is one of those spaces where you just want to hang out. I've heard a number of adults say, "Wow! I wish I had a place like this when I was in High School." If you are an FFC peep I'd encourage you to check out the room tomorrow night.

The games about to start... better run, catch ya' latter.

I Just Saved You Money

Have you seen the "snuggie" yet? It's a "blanket" you wear with sleeves, and it can be yours for only $14.95. Let me help you out here - - just put your robe on backwards... you're welcome... You can send me 5 bucks.
