Upcoming Vacation

Next week Tammy, Shelby, and I will be taking off for a week. I'm looking forward to a little relaxation during the week and then by the weekend I will be taking part in special services at my father's church in Providence, Indiana. We are calling the weekend "Deep Impact"; if you think of it you could say a prayer that the weekend will be a blessing to those at Providence Christian Church and most importantly that the Kingdom of God will be positively impacted.

I'll do my best to blog about the services, if I get a chance.

Remember When

Every now and then I do a bit of reflecting on the past. There may be some of you reading the blog that may have been a part of the church waaaaay back when we were on the dead end road on Henry Street six years ago and you can remember some of these moments. For those of you who weren't there you'll just have to use your imagination.

Remember my first Sunday and during the "open worship" (testimony time) we had a lady who shared for a verrrry loooong time and then she started sharing some things that probably shouldn't have been shared in a large group. Awwwkward - I finally had to stop her and tell her that I and several women would council her after the service. I thought, "What in the world have I gotten myself into here?"

Remember cramming so many people into the old annex for chicken noodle dinners that you could barely get around the room? With that many bodies in that space we were sweating in the middle of winter... the kitchen was the hottest!

Remember blowing the fuses every other month during the chicken noodle dinners because we had so many roasters plugged in?

Remember the green and orange shag carpet in the sanctuary? I still have a small piece of it in my desk at church.

Any other memories you would like to share?...

An Interview With: James Pinkerton

James Pinkerton is our Youth Pastor at FFC. Many of the students call him "Pastor Pink". It's been really good reconnecting with James, we have a good time sharing stories from college and making one another laugh... sometimes we cry, but that's only becuase we've been laughing so hard. Here's my interview with James.

Me: How long have you worked at FFC now?
James: About 3 months now.

Me: What can you tell us about your family?
James: I have two kids who like to have people play with them ALL THE TIME! My wife and I like movies, clean TV shows, music (especially Christian Worship), and just spending time together.

Me: Do you have any hobbies or sports you enjoy?
James: Fantasy Football, Golf, Coaching, Bible Reading, spending time with students, playing Wii, and blogging.

Me: What are some of your dream/goals for the youth ministry at FFC?
James: To have students continually come and ask me how to know God better. To have more and more students wanting to teshuva to God. To have students want to be at youth group and at our events more than anything else because this is where they experience God. I would like God to bless us with 150 students in the youth ministry groups by June 2008.

Me: What are some of your favorite movies or TV shows?
James: I like American Idol (Er, Americas best singer show), So You Think You Can Dance, Journeyman (reminds me of Quantum Leap), Lost, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Chariots of Fire, Tombstone (“Why Ike, whatever do you mean?)

Me: Would you make me chicken tacos again sometime soon?
James: I would like to make you some Chicken Tacos and then go into the living room and play Tiger Woods 2008 on the Wii very soon!

Sermon Preparation

Generally in my sermon preparation I'm at least 3- 6 weeks out. This really helps me, and those who assist in the media ministries, to prepare for each Sunday. However, once I get toward the end of a sermon series I get anxious to start the new series because I want to share the new information so badly. This season is no different; I will be beginning a new series November 10 & 11 that I can't wait to share with the congregation.

This weekend should be interesting. James and sat down the other day and decided to do things a little out of the norm for the 10:30 service; you'll want to come and check it out. If you attend the 10:30 a.m. service this weekend be sure to give me some feedback.

GREENsburg a.k.a The Emerald City

This post may not mean much to many of you; it has more meaning for those of us who have lived in Western Kansas. If you recall Greensburg, Kansas was basically wiped off the map by a massive F5 tornado last May.

I was talking with James the other night and he mentioned something interesting; he said that Greensburg is going to be rebuilt by Leonardo DiCaprio - I, of course, laughed. This evening I googled it, and sure enough Leonardo DiCaprio is going to rebuild Greensburg, Kansas. He is partnering with the discovery channel and putting together a series called, "Eco-Town". Greensburg will be rebuilt as a "green" town... it should be interesting. You can read about it here and here.

Portable Sounds Tour

Yesterday evening I had the privilege of hanging out with our youth group at the Toby Mac, "Portable Sounds" concert in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Thousand Foot Krutch and Barlow Girl opened the concert. It was an excellent concert - my ears are still ringing (no joke - more specifically just my left ear which was closer to the speakers) - but it was a great concert!

For those of you who may not have been to a concert for a while, a good friend of mine, Bryan Vickery can help you with all of the moves you'll need to know. You can learn how to get your groove on here.

God Wants Me Happy???

"God wants me happy". What? Are you serious? That actually came out of your mouth?... I couldn't believe my ears. Let's think about this for a moment... do you really think God merely wants you happy? God's sole desire is that you have an enjoyable day? Your happiness trumps His direct commands? If truth, commitment, love, peace, kindness, integrity, forgiveness, self control, etc. gets in the way of your happiness then God yields to your happiness? Are you kidding me?

God's not after your happiness, He desires your obedience! Psalm 51:6 tells us that God desires truth deep down within us; not happy bubbly feelings. The psalmist writes, "I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." Ps. 40:8. God tells His children in Lev. 26:3,4 " 'If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees of the field their fruit." He continues to list multiple blessings for obeying him; God then follows up the blessings with a list of curses for those who do not obey. And I'm sure there was some ding dong who didn't want to obey God because it got in the way of their "happiness" going, "Yeah, but God wants me happy."

God loves it when we are enjoying the life He blessed us with within the bounds of His expressed commands and desires.

An Interview With: Tonya Pinkerton

Tonya is our Children's Pastor and doing a fantastic job. Tammy and I have known Tonya and her husband James since Bible College. It's so great having friends that we've known for a long time join us on staff. Here is my interview with Tonya:

Me: How long have you worked at FFC now?
Tonya: About 2 1/2 months

Me: Where/how did you and James meet?
Tonya: The very first time we met was when the Barclay Choir came to my church in Plains, Kansas. I was a senior in High School and had already decided to go to Barclay. I remember how good they sounded and that there were a lot of cute, dark headed guys in the choir! We officially met the next year at Barclay College and became interested in each other on a choir road trip after I had broken up with my first college boyfriend. The rest is history!

Me: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Tonya: Hanging out with my family, scrapbooking, decorating my house, cooking, watching t.v.

Me: What states have you lived in?
Tonya: Oh my gosh, there's so many! Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma, Kansas, California, Missouri, and now Indiana!

Me: What do you enjoy most about your position as Children’s Pastor?
Tonya: Getting to know the kids and seeing a relationship built.

Me: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Tonya: Tuscany, Italy

Me: Could you ask James to make me some chicken tacos again?
Tonya: Why, are you afraid to ask him? Just kidding, of course I can!

Sunday Night Mind Dump

Today I was wiped out after church. I took a nap at 2:15 p.m. and didn't wake up until 5:00 p.m., I could have kept sleeping but knew I had to get up.

I've had a larger than usual number of people thank me for preaching on adultery. I always feel awkward being thanked for something that is so clearly spoken of in the Bible - but I appreciate the encouragement none the less.

My counseling load is beginning to rise quickly. It seem that by preaching on marriage/adultery I've stoked a fire - I just wish I were a better counselor. I'll listen and encourage as best I can and refer those that I can't help to a professional counselor.

I'm looking forward to spending a little extra time with the other pastors at FFC on Tuesday afternoon. We will spend some time dreaming about the future and catching up with each other.

We brought our "First Fruits" offering today to the church for our Building to Bless...Another Generation campaign. We are well on our way to getting the ball rolling on breaking ground and making the vision a reality.

Love Affair

Preaching on adultery isn't my favorite topic, but seeing families fall apart isn't my favorite thing to see. It would be so nice to think that everyone who comes to church doesn't have to worry about breaking the seventh commandment, but that's just not the case.

God loves us too much not to warn us about the pain involved in adultery...

[Proverbs 5:3-6] “For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths are crooked, but she knows it not. [Proverbs 5:8] Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house, [Proverbs 5:15-22] Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love. Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife? For a man's ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all his paths. The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast.”

2 Samuel Chapter 11:1-4, “In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king's men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite? Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her.”...

“…the thing David had done displeased the Lord.” 2nd Samuel 11:27...
“Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.” 2nd Samuel 12:10

Exodus 20:14 "You shall not commit adultery.

Catalyst Hangover

Catalyst Conference (see previous posts) has been over for more than a week now and I'm still feeling the effects from it. My heart has been enlarged for those in need around the world. The theme of Catalyst this year was "reverb", meaning that our lives can have reverberation when we are living a life of blessing for others. The question posed to the 11,000 plus attendees was, "What are you going to do?" I've asked myself that question over and over and have been trying to discern what God would have me to do. I can't go into a lot of detail right now but I have some clear direction for some next steps and I'm anxious to begin letting my life reverberate.

New Poll

Well, we have a winner on our poll for the worst drivers. It appears that, according to our scientific poll, if you see a car from Ohio you may want to drive the other way. Or as one of my favorite bumper stickers puts it, "If you don't like my driving - stay off the sidewalks."

Check out the new poll and weigh in on your opinion of the worst car ever. If you'd like a car added to the list just post a comment to one of the blog posts and I'll add it to the survey.

Spiritual Day Off

I didn't get a chance to blog last night - Comcast decided it needed a break from providing internet service !?!?

So today this blog is coming to you via Panera in Muncie. Today is my spiritual day off and I'm spending the morning/afternoon praying and preparing for the next several months of messages for our church. Preparing in advance is far from unspiritual; I can't begin to tell you the number of times God has used a message/theme that I prepared months in advance to specifically touch an individual or group of people. It is so awesome the way the Holy Spirit is not only spontaneous but prepared for the future!

I love these days. For some reason when I get away my creativity seems to spike and I can just spend time trying to discern from God where it is he wants us to go. Looking ahead I can't wait to share what God has placed on my heart - this will be an exciting season for us as a church. I'm just crazy enough to believe that God can use us to make an impact in this world for Him!!

In just a moment Shelby and Tammy will be joining me for lunch and then I will go right back to it... here they are now.

An Interview With: Marggy Hensley

Marggy Hensley is our Pastor of Administration at FFC. Marggy is such a blessing to me - she takes a lot of the administrative duties off of my plate, which allows me to focus a lot more on the messages. Here is my interview with Marggy...

Me: How long have you worked at FFC now?
Marggy: It will be one year this month (October)

Me: Where did you work before?
Marggy: First Merchants Bank, In Muncie I worked at the bank for 9 years many of which were in the Commercial Loan Department, where business loans are made. My position was as administrative assistant to the head of the department.

Me: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Marggy: Reading, gardening (I call it playing in the dirt) and crocheting.

Me: Have you always lived in Indiana?
Marggy: Yes all of my life. I grew up in Royerton and attended Delta schools all 12 years. My dad still lives in the same home I grew up in.

Me: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Marggy: I would love to go on a mission’s trip anywhere outside the US. This is something I have wanted to do for years and am praying that God will make a way for me to go soon.
I hear others talk about how a mission’s trip changed them forever. It seems to help people appreciate all the blessings that God has given them so much more and others have talked about how they think less of themselves and more about others after a mission’s trip. I would love to have the experience of a mission’s trip and know that I always have room to grow into Christ’s likeness.

Me: Do you know any good jokes?
Marggy: Why did the boy throw the butter out of the window? Because he wanted to see the butterfly (It is a joke but I am not sure if it is a good one.)

Happy Columbus Day!

Happy Columbus Day!!! I wait all year for this very special holiday and it has finally arrived. I don't know how you celebrate it in your home, but in our home I dress up as Christopher Columbus, fill the bathtub full of water – jump in and “sail” to the “new country” where I am greeted by my 2 "Indian princesses". We then exchange gifts: I give them a necklace made of dandelion weeds in exchange for 30 pounds of gold. The festivities are concluded with the 3 of us singing a rousing chorus of “Oh Columbus Day” around a big spread of turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry relish, and a Dairy Queen ice cream cake.

Happy Columbus Day! If you will excuse me, I’ve got to get changed into my outfit.

Sunday Night Mind Dump

I enjoyed announcing the total amount from our "Building to Bless" pledges. So far we have pledged $1,000,020, to date. "Only God" could do something like this in Farmland, Indiana. What a blessing! Next weekend is our "First Fruits" offering where we bring the first portions of our pledges so that we can begin breaking ground on our new building.

For those who are curious; my brother-in-law (Ronn Oren) and I sat in section 118 Row 13! I really enjoyed my first pro football game, especially from row 13. It was enjoyable watching the Colts beat up on Tampa Bay.

All the way back on June 21st I posted about getting my sound system fixed. I then re-posted about the trials of trying to get my sound system fixed and the exercise in patience it provided for me. I'm happy to report that after several months of trying I know have a sound system once again. They didn't necessarily make it easy for me once again, but all is well that ends well.

FYI, tomorrow is Columbus Day. You'll want to check back and read tomorrow's blog to see how I spend Columbus Day...

Take a Wild Guess

I am doing something tomorrow afternoon that I have never done before and I've been wanting to do it for a long time now. I won't tell you what it is but I will give you a few hints. Let's see if you can get this one...

It's a place that I'm driving to on a Sunday afternoon...

I am meeting my brother-in-law Ronn there...

It begins with the letter 'C'...

It's a kind of horse...

The color 'blue'...

Two words "pig", "skin".

One more hint... '4-0'...

Oh Yeah!!!!!!!!!!

Catalyst Day 2

I didn't get a chance to blog yesterday evening so let me just fill you in on a few of the things that impressed me on the last day of Catalyst.

The worship: these guys can rock! Steve Fee did a great job of leading worship! I sang so loud I nearly lost my voice. The energy in the place was amazing.

Craig Groeschel spoke passionately about "practical atheism", believing that there is a God but not living like He exists. Craig's transparency as a pastor is inspiring.

Dave Ramsey spoke about stewardship/management and the power of being debt free. His concluding video choked me up big time.

I broke another record Friday morning... we broke the record for breaking records. Everyone had a "45" vinyl record and we all broke them in half at the same time. We broke the record for breaking records ;-)

Wintley Phipps brought the house down when he sang Amazing Grace. You can check him out here on YouTube (I think this clip is from a Gaither Homecoming video).

I always love listening to Andy Stanley..... even if I've heard the same message 5 times about "systems".

I had a great time hanging out with Marggy, James, Anne Pinkerton (James' sister), and Matt Nash (good friend of James & Anne).

Catalyst did exactly what I had prayed it would; I came away challenged, inspired, refreshed and recharged!!

Catalyst Day 1

Today was day 1 of our Catalyst Conference experience; 5:15 a.m. came very early this morning, and it was still very dark outside when we first arrived on the "red carpet" before 7:00 a.m.. After waiting outside for what seemed like an eternity we quickly made our way into the auditorium where James scored us some sweet seats - ROW 2!!!! That's right second row from the stage on the floor. Over 11,000 people in attendance and we have some of the best seats. All around us was reserved seating except for the seats we had!

The first speaker was Andy Stanley, Andy spoke on the power of a leader. Jesus is our example in John 13 (washing His disciples feet), He led with humility and leveraged His power for the sake of others - not for self.

Catherine Rohr is doing a great work with Prisoner Entrepreneurship Program; this is a program that seeks to bring some life change to prisoners through entrepreneurial efforts.

Other speakers and guests included: Patrick Lencioni - job misery. The authors of the book UnChristian. Shane Claiborne, Pastor Sunday Adelaja, and Rick Warren also spoke. I've got to say that Francis Chan brought it today! This guy is crazy on fire for God; his passion was contagious.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot I set 3 world records today - 1. Most Frisbees tossed simultaneously 2. Most soap bubbles blown at once 3. Most soap bubbles popped by Frisbees.

If I had more time and I weren't so wiped out I'd blog about our experience at Chili's this evening... holy cow, I've never waited so long for a burger in my life!

I'd post pictures but blogger isn't cooperating this evening.

Catalyst Prelude

We have arrived safely in Atlanta and have settled into our hotel. No wrong turns and no accidents... yeah! It's so awesome being back in Atlanta; the seminary I graduated from is here in Atlanta - Luther Rice University.

For those who don't know, Atlanta is home to the original Chick-fil-A. I'm a fan of Chic-fil-A and I just had to stop by one of their Dwarf Houses (offers table service and counter service options) there are 11 in the Atlanta metro area. To top it off, we crossed the Chick-fil-A parking lot and picked up some Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for tomorrow morning... I'm not too sure that the doughnuts will survive until tomorrow morning though with James and I in the same room with them - mmmmmm doughnuts.

I'm ready for tomorrow to get here... Catalyst should be exciting!

Catalyst Road Trip

Tomorrow several of us from the church will be heading out to the Catalyst Conference in Atlanta. I've been wanting to go to Catalyst for several years now and this is sort of like a little dream come true for me. :-) It's great that I can spend this time with some of the staff... and about 10,000 other Christian leaders from around the world.

Here's a short list of some of the speakers scheduled to speak this year: Craig Groeschel, Andy Stanley, John Maxwell, Dave Ramsey, Erwin McManus, Rick Warren, and many more. I plan on being challenged and inspired and coming back refreshed and recharged.

If at all possible, I will be blogging from the conference.
