As a pastor I just love it when I find that people actually follow through on a sermon or a challenge to do something. It has happened a couple of times this week and it just fires me up, blesses my socks off, and keeps me going.
The first was in our college age growth group at our house last Tuesday evening. A young lady shared that she had applied one of the steps I suggested at the end of last weekend's message regarding dealing with jealousy. She shared with us that she had a heart to heart talk with God, and following that prayer/conversation she felt much better. Yeah God! And yeah for this young woman who actually did the sermon rather than just listen to the sermon. When she told the college group about how she applied the sermon, you could have knocked me over with a feather. I was so proud of her and so happy that I was used by God to make a difference.
The second happened just this evening when someone read the last blog post about "sobering facts" and actually did something by making a donation to Blood: Water Mission. Once again, I am so proud of this gentleman and so glad that I get to see God at work in the lives of others.
Sometimes we just have to do something. Not just talk about it, not just say, "Oh that's too bad." or, "Oh I need to apply that truth to my life... someday". Don't you ever just get that feeling that now is the time... enough talk, enough intellectualizing, enough selfishness, enough apathy, enough injustice? You think "somebody has to step up!" and then you realize you're the somebody and it's time to do something... anything!

Sobering Facts
I'd like to share some sobering facts; Some of the stats are from the late 90's but I truly doubt that mankind has gotten any better in a decade.
Half the world — nearly three billion people — live on less than two dollars a day.
In 1960, the 20% of the world’s people in the richest countries had 30 times the income of the poorest 20% — in 1997, 74 times as much.
Some 1.1 billion people in developing countries have inadequate access to water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation.
The richest 50 million people in Europe and North America have the same income as 2.7 billion poor people. “The slice of the cake taken by 1% is the same size as that handed to the poorest 57%.”
Stats taken from, http://www.globalissues.org/TradeRelated/Facts.asp#fact22
27 Million people are enslaved today.... http://www.notforsalecampaign.org/Default.aspx
More than 2 billion people lack access to electricity and modern forms of energy.
More than 10 million children under age 5 die each year. Two-thirds of these deaths — more than 6 million deaths every year — are preventable.
Of the 22 countries where more than half the population is illiterate, 15 are in Africa.
Water-related disease is the second biggest killer of children worldwide, after acute respiratory infections such as tuberculosis.
Every day, nearly 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes. That amounts to one child every 5 seconds.
Worldwide, an estimated 40 million children under age 15 suffer from violence, abuse and neglect.
Thirty-two percent of U.S. adults have less than positive feelings toward America's charitable organizations. And only one in 10 strongly agrees that charitable organizations are honest and ethical in their use of donated funds.

The Monsters Within - Greed
Over the past several weeks at church we have been talking about the stuff that gets stuck in our heart that has the potential to mess with us and our relationships. This weekend I'm going to talk about a very sensitive subject - I will be talking about our heart and our possessions.
What I find interesting is that whenever I talk about money, people get so defensive. Reportedly, we’ve had people leave the church because they said all I ever talk about is money. What’s interesting is, I generally do one series a year on money and I do the same amount on family relationships. I’ve never had anyone leave the church saying, "all you talk about is the family".
So at the risk once again of having people get honked off at me I will be stepping on toes talking about one of the biggest things lodged in our hearts - GREED. Fortunately, God has plenty of helpful advice about how to continually rid our hearts of that monster called "greed".
Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." - Jesus
(If FFC is your church home would you be praying for people's hearts not to be immediately defensive but receptive - not necessarily to my words, but to God's Word? I sure would appreciate it; see you Sunday.)

Radio Interview Thoughts 2
It was great heading back to the JOY FM radio station today. This time James came with me, and I thought he did a great job communicating what the youth group is up to. By the way, James said the word "potty" on live radio.
JOY FM is a great radio station (I'm not just saying that because we were "church of the month") they play great music and they do some pretty awesome things for the community (you will have to tune in and hear some of the ways that they will bless people this Christmas season). If you live in the area (and have a radio that can pick it up), I highly recommend 88.9 Joy FM.

Wii Wrestle with Jealousy
If you missed the service this weekend, let me recap the point that I made by giving away an Wii.
This weekend I spoke once again about our heart and how there are heart issues that we need to be aware of. The topic for this weekend was jealousy. We get jealous of peoples: abilities, wealth, homes, cars, looks, etc. When we are jealous of another person and what that person has, the truth is, our problem isn't with that person or that possession, it's a heart issue. The way we know that it's not a problem with the person is because they can't do anything to solve our problem. The only thing the other person can do to help your jealousy issue is to fail; we tend to feel better when the person we are envious of "falls on their face", which really just magnifies the fact that you have a problem with jealousy.
To prove my point that jealousy isn't about a possession or a person, I had three volunteers who wanted a Nintendo Wii to come up on stage. This is the point at which Rick, Taylor, and Lori came up. I handed Taylor a gift, and when he opened it he got a, highly sought after, Nintendo Wii. The next person to get a gift was Lori, Lori got a $50 gift card, it's not a Nintendo Wii, but not bad. Finally, Rick opened his gift and he got a lousy banana.
If you remove me from the equation the only thing each person can do is look at what the other person has. But in this scenario if any of the 3 are dissatisfied it would be ridiculous to be upset at each other. If they are dissatisfied with their gift they should take it up with the gift giver - me, in this case. They can’t get upset with each other; how silly would it be for Lori to not get along with Taylor just because he was given a Wii? And poor Rick, who got the banana, would have a hard time having a good attitude not because of Taylor or Lori but because of me. The only person they can even get upset with is the person giving the gifts. Worse yet, what if I had decided to give the younger person the banana and give the Wii to the adult? Can you imagine how upset people would have been? "That's just not right, you've got to give the Wii to the kid!" No I don't, I'm the gift giver - I choose who gets what... and if you don't like it you can't get mad at the recipient.
Do you know who your real issue is with when you are jealous or envious? God. Jealousy says, "God owes me." God owes me: that ability, that car, that job, that kind of home, that kind of family, those parents, etc.." Your jealous heart isn't about that person or that possession, you think God owes you, you think God ripped you off, and that's not fair! But God never claims to be fair. God is the gift giver and gives to whomever He wants and He gives whatever He wants. And it becomes our job to celebrate the goodness of God in other people's lives, that celebration will break the power of jealousy in our hearts.

Mr. Sorensen 8 - warm mice in my attic - 1
This evening there is a warm little mouse in my attic with a full little belly of peanut butter... traps don't always do what they are supposed to do. I guess one little mouse in the attic is okay for one night. There's another serving of peanut butter for the little mouse to sample tonight :-)

Wii Rock
This evening at our Saturday night service we gave away a Nintendo Wii, as well as a couple of other gifts. What a great church! A coffee shop, gifts given away, and the truth of God's Word is presented; are you kidding me?!
There was a purpose behind giving away the Wii, it was used to make a point. If you come tomorrow to the church service you will be able to hear the point that was made. Until then, here are some pictures of those who were blessed this evening... (please excuse the blurry pictures.)

Radio Interview Thoughts
I really enjoyed speaking with David at Joy FM this morning. David is a great guy and I'm looking forward to next Tuesday morning when we get to chat on air again. I'm going to make sure that I take a caramel mocha latte with me so that he can enjoy some of our "Higher Ground" coffee from the church.
Unfortunately James wasn't able to join me this morning because one of his kids is not feeling well. If all goes according to plan he and or Tonya should be able to be on the air next Tuesday.

Radio Interview
Tomorrow morning (Tuesday November, 20th) at 8:00 a.m. James and I will be on the Joy FM 88.9 radio station to talk about the church. At least I think James is coming with me - I've got to make sure Tonya can get him out of bed and out the door by 7:00 a.m.
I always get a little self-conscious when I do media things like this. In the back of my mind as I'm speaking I'm always thinking, "I hope I don't embarrass myself and sound like a complete moron." So while I'm concentrating on not being an idiot, I end up sounding like an idiot because I'm not thinking about what I'm supposed to be saying. So, now you know what I'll be thinking in the back of my mind as I'm speaking tomorrow. ;-)
I'm looking forward to talking about all the great things happening here at FFC. If you don't live in the area you can listen online at JOY FM's website.

Gingerbread House
I mentioned before that I'd try to get some pictures up of Tammy and Shelby's gingerbread house... Everything is edible except the cardboard and the fluffy "snow"... I was the official taste tester ;-)

Cold Weary Travelers
Every year at about this time our home becomes a haven for some cold travelers. Our home is right next to Bob Chalfant's field and when he brings the crops in during the fall all the little mice say, "Wow, it's kind of cold and lonely out here. Hey, why don't we head over to the Sorensen's place." All the little mice friends say, "Yeah, let's do it! I love the Sorensen's; they've got all that nice insulation in the attic". And so the march of the mice begins and we are stop number one in their journey for warmth. Unfortunately for the mice, Mr. Sorensen (that's me) isn't all that fond of cold weary travelers and their first stop becomes their last. (Que the sadistic laughter)
So far it's Mr. Sorensen 2 - warm mice in my attic 0
Just don't tell my wife that I caught 2 mice in the attic (Mrs. Sorensen hates mice). Come to think of it - she'll discover we had mice as soon as she reads this blog post... you can go ahead and tell her if you want.

Got Time?
Do you have about a billion spare hours? I found this post from Seth Godin's website today and wish I could go through all of these websites but it's impossible. You can go HERE to see the list he put together on squidoo.com from a website called "mashable". I've placed the link in my favorites so that I can come back to it. I'd make a more creative blog post but I'm going back to that list. ;-)

Some Random Questions
Why do I always snack while watching, "The Biggest Loser"?
Where did my 4 year old daughter pick up the phrase "That looks hideous?"
How is it that James Pinkerton can hit a hole in one while playing me in golf on the Wii?
How many "Littlest Pet Shop" pets can Hasbro possibly make?
When will James make me some more chicken tacos?
Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?

Lunch with the Pastors
This afternoon several of the other pastors joined me at Panera for lunch. We didn't have a set agenda for our gathering, I just like hanging out with them. It's always nice getting out of the routine, finding a new environment, and connecting with others. FFC is very fortunate to have the staff that we do.
By they way, I had the chicken ceaser salad and a chocolate chip cookie- there, now you know.

You'll Know It's Here
I personally felt that last weekend's service at FFC went really well. The music, the message, and the Spirit's presence in the church was fantastic. I long for weekend's like that; but I also feel that there is so much more that God wants to do than just one good service where we sense His presence and leave it at that. I think He wants to do something in our lives that makes the world around us take note. I've carried something in my Bible that I wrote a little over a year ago. It's just a reminder to me of what I long for God to do in our church.
When the seeker drops to his knees in worship, you'll know it's here.
When the broken and damaged are healed by Christ's power, you'll know it's here.
When the lost are found, you'll know it's here.
When the mature stop saying "feed me" and begin to exercise their faith, you'll know it's here.
When the lame are walking, the mute are speaking, and the deaf are hearing, you'll know it's here.
When the fearful share their faith in boldness, you'll know it's here.
When men, women, and children are weeping in repentance, you'll know it's here.

mmmmm Tasty
mmmmm humble pie. Chargers 23 - Colts 21
James is really a good friend - he's done an excellent job of consoling me after the disgusting game last night. (I would have laughed at you if you told me Manning was going to throw 6 interceptions and Adam Vinatieri was going to miss 2 field goals... "preposterous" I say!)
I'm sad the Colts lost; mainly because I had a little victory dance all figured out to show James. Instead of dancing, I'm stuck eating my words =(

Colts vs. Chargers
I'm blogging a little earlier than usual; I may not get a chance latter this evening. In just a moment I'm going to be heading back to the church to watch the Colts vs. the Chargers on our BIG screens. This should be fun, the only Charger fan in the place will be Pastor Pink. I'll try to be a good friend and console him when his Chargers lose. =)
Once again, I'm looking forward to hanging out with my church family and enjoying time with one another.

It's Beginning to Smell
It's beginning to smell a lot like Christmas. This evening the smell of gingerbread is filling the house and it smells great! This year Tammy will be entering a gingerbread house in the "Christmas Walk" up town. Unfortunately, I can't eat any of the gingerbread and that really stinks.
...
If I can, I'll sneak in a photo or two of the completed project when it gets done.

Second Saturday Serve
Tomorrow morning at 9:00 I'll be taking part in our "Second Saturday Serve". Second Saturday Serve is an outreach of our church in which we go out and participate in service projects around our community. Tomorrow morning we will be hitting the streets of Farmland with our rakes and will be offering to rake people's lawns. I'm looking forward to serving alongside others in our church and letting others in our community know that we genuinely love them.

The Monsters Within
This weekend we are beginning a new series called "The Monsters Within". Lurking within our hearts are some hideous monsters; things like guilt, jealousy, greed, and anger. Fortunately, God has given us insight into how to defeat these monsters in our lives. I'm looking forward to the next several weeks and sharing the truth of God's Word with my church family once again. If you call FFC your church home, I'll see you this weekend!! If you don't live in this area you can check out the service live at 10:30 Eastern Time this Sunday.

Website Face Lift
Over the past couple of days I've spent over 14 hours working on the church website. It takes me longer than most people because I don't always know what I'm doing. There's still some tweaking that needs to be done to it but I think the "face lift" looks much better. Swing by http://www.farmlandfriends.org/ and take a look. I'm always open to suggestions and new ideas if you have any.

The Best Marketing Ever!
I saw this necklace on our vacation and knew I just had to share it with you, (my faithful blog readers :-) In case you can't read it; it says, "Make a wish...and put on this necklace...when your necklaces wears off... your wish should be granted..." In other words, "When this necklace breaks your wish will come true".
This has to be the best marketing ever! This company made a piece of garbage necklace and some genius turned it into a positive. The company looked at this necklace that was made cheaply and was falling apart and began to wonder, "how can we make this work to our advantage"? When the little necklace breaks, rather than some little girl crying, she can jump up and down and say "My wish is coming true, my wish is coming true!"
My question is, what if I wish that my necklace won't break???

Back from Vacation/Revival
I'm back from our vacation/revival this evening. The revival went well; I shared the preaching responsibilities with my brother-in-law, Ronn Oren. I'd have to say that this was the best revival services that Providence Christian Church has seen in over half a century - (I have to say that because this was the only revival service in over 60 years :-)
It's good to be back home, unfortunately I returned home to 394 emails - most of them spam... so annoying! Time to start deleting...
