My Side Hurts from Laughing part 1

Thank you to all who have voted in the poll so far: regarding what you like to read most on this blog. If you haven't voted yet be sure to make your voice heard (see poll on the right side of this screen); only 3 days left to vote. Since a majority of you enjoy humorous blogs I thought I'd post a series of videos that have been making me laugh for over a year now.

Disclaimer: This video was creatively/humorously made by a church to show what Jesus is not like. (Just in case you were confused :-)

Where is She Now?

Who could ever forget Miss South Carolina's response to the "map question"? I know I can't forget, no matter how hard I try. It got me to wondering though, where is she now? Where could she be 2 days latter?? Well, after some research I found out that she will be appearing on the Today Show tomorrow morning (Tuesday, August 28th). It appears that she will get a second chance to answer the question on live TV. Any guesses as to what her response will be???

How to Make More Money

If you missed last Sunday's service then you missed out on learning how to make more money. That's right I explained to everyone how they could make more money. I've never seen everyone so excited as last Sunday :-) Seriously, if you missed the message request a DVD (it's free) and be sure to catch up with our "Building to Bless" series.

I'll post some of the main thoughts here so that you can begin making more money now -

Every decision that you make is determined by your beliefs. You have certain beliefs about marriage or parenting and your beliefs affect the decisions you make regarding parenting/marriage. If you want different outcomes in your life, the truth is, you will need to make different decisions which means you need a different way of thinking. When it comes to money every decision you make financially is an overflow of what you believe about debt, about investing, about spending, saving, about purchasing, etc. So if you are going to change your financial outcome it is not a matter of making different decisions but a matter of changing your beliefs.

King David gives us an excellent look at the core belief that will assist us in actually making more money.

1 Chronicles 29, “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all…Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name. "But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.”

The fact is God owns it all. When you begin to believe the truth that God owns it all and He distributes as He sees fit, then you begin to behave as a manager and not an owner. That’s what God says all throughout scripture, we are not owners, we are simply managers who are responsible for managing His stuff.

When the person with a little bit of money and the person with a lot of money begins to embrace the fact that their money is not theirs they make different kinds of decisions with their money because they are now responsible. And when you are responsible you make better choices and when you make better choices you have more money.

Let me break it down:

Belief: God owns it all.
Therefore: I am not an owner but a manger
Result: Since it’s not mine I become more responsible
When I’m more responsible I make better financial decisions.
When I make better financial decisions – I have more money.

Your welcome - but don't thank me, thank God.

You Make the Caption

Tammy and I were watching about 10 minutes of the Miss Teen USA competition (don't ask me why - I don't know); but we were fortunate enough to catch the end where they were asking the final contestants their question. I think Tammy nearly wet herself laughing so hard at South Carolina's answer ...

Her teachers must be so proud of her ;-)

Be Sure to Vote

A priest, a rabbi, and a minister die in a car crash...

Well according to the poll so far (see poll on the right side of this blog) It seems that 100% of those who have voted thus far are into the humorous/random blog posts. I can't say that I blame you. I tend to enjoy reading blogs that have some wacky humor in them or clever insights. Be sure to vote on the newly added poll - let your voice be heard. Most likely I'm going to keep the blog very similar to the way it is, with a mixture of serious, funny, and practical. I did however change the template again :-)

...A minister, a priest, and a rabbi die in a car crash. They go to heaven for orientation. They are all asked, "When you are in your casket, and friends, family, and congregants are mourning over you, what would you like them to say?"

The minister says, "I would like to hear them say that I was a wonderful husband, a fine spiritual leader, and a great family man."

The priest says, "I would like to hear that I was a wonderful teacher and a servant of God who made a huge difference in people's lives."

The rabbi replies, "I would like to hear them say,"Look, he's moving!"

Pictures as Promised

I loved the Creation Museum today! We had a great time. If you ever get the chance to go - do it. I would recommend going on a weekday however. My father said that on the weekends the lines are looooong. I took a lot of pictures; I won't bore you with too many...

Kings Island Report

Today Tammy, Shelby, and I enjoyed our first trip ever to Kings Island and it was HOT! The nice thing about it being so hot was that we were one of the few idiots out treading the hot pavement so we could basically "walk on" to every ride. Shelby had a blast on the Giggle Coaster...Tonight we are staying at a hotel near Cincinnati (gotta' love the free wireless internet :) Tomorrow morning we meet my parents at the brand new Creation Museum. I've been wanting to go to the Creation Museum ever since I first heard about the possibility of it being built a couple of years ago. If they allow photography I'll be sure to get some photos posted tomorrow evening.

Newbie Blogger 2

She did it. She took the leap and jumped in with both feet. Tonya Pinkerton our new Children's Pastor is now blogging. You can check out her blog here. Be sure to stop by her blog and let her know your glad she took the plunge.

I think that the blogs that the FFC pastors are doing are a fantastic way for the church to keep up with our lives and to learn more about us. With nearly 500 people attending church on Sundays, there is no way that we can get around to every person and sit down with them so that they can get to know us better. Blogging provides us the opportunity of letting others get to know us a little bit better.

By the way, I enjoy keeping track of the blogs from others within our church. You can find the links to the other blogs of people within our church on the right hand side of this screen. If you are a part of the church and are blogging I'd love to visit your blog... shoot me an email or post a comment here so I can swing by your blog and say 'hi'.

A Little Something Yummy and a Little Something...

This evening we headed over to the Pinkerton's home and enjoyed chicken tacos (yummy!) If James Pinkerton ever offers you chicken tacos tell him, "Yes I'd loves some chicken tacos!" and then take them and bring them straight to me. I love 'em!

By the way I want to share something super disgusting with you. Along with the tacos we had an appetizer of chips and salsa. Now, the chips and salsa were not disgusting - it was what I saw next. I saw Tammy dip her chip in, take a nice big bite and then she dipped the chip back in for more! That's right - the "preachers wife" double dipped! Aghhhhh! That's just wrong. Feel free to leave your comments regarding this uncouth behavior on this post and I'll be sure to pass them on to Tammy ;-)

Newbie Blogger

I'm pleased to announce the launch of a brand new blog... after much coaxing and twisting of his arm, James Pinkerton has entered the blogging world. That's right Pastor James, a.k.a Pastor Pink, a.k.a PJ, a.k.a. Buttercup (OK, that's a new one I made up just now ;) James' blog can be found here. This was not an easy task considering not too many "West Coasters" are blogging; so for James to jump in so fast is pretty amazing. Now we just need to work on getting Tonya to start blogging :-)

Head on over to James' blog and welcome him to the neighborhood.

Random Thoughts

  • Our Building to Bless Capital Campaign is going to be awesome (very time consuming for me and the staff; but awesome!)
  • I'm Ready for some football!! And not this preseason garbage.
  • I totally can't believe I'm working with my best friends from college - James & Tonya Pinkerton!
  • There is nothing on TV for another 35 days 23 hours and 10 minutes.
  • I've got to get this book and apply it :-)
  • I'm going to Kings Island for the first time in my life. I'm looking forward to it.
  • I can't wait to preach next Sunday!
  • I think I could use a good laugh this evening. So it looks like season 1 of The Office is going into the DVD player.

Saturday Night Reflections

Let me preface this blog post by saying that I'm not looking for compliments or encouragement; I just want to share what I'm thinking. Tonight was one of those nights that when I got done preaching that I felt a little discouraged. I really felt like I did a poor job of preaching; that always drives me nuts because I want to give God my very best. I will be praying hard that tomorrow goes better. Fortunately, God's presence can always make up for my frailties and He can touch hearts in spite of me.

Picnic

Today for my day off we headed over to Memorial Park in New Castle and enjoyed a picnic (see below for my rant). The park had a lot of shelters, walking trails, and courts to choose from. Tammy snapped some pictures of Shelby that I thought I'd share...

For the life of me, I can't figure out why Muncie, Indiana can't get a decent and safe park. I've seen smaller towns with nicer parks. Fortunately, New Castle is a nice enough park and it is only a half hour drive away, but at some point you get tired of driving to other towns/cities to get to family friendly spots. OK, that's enough of my opinion about Muncie... for now.

Building to Bless

Our "Building to Bless" effort is beginning to pick up steam. We've been having strategic meetings, planning upcoming events, and praying for several weeks now. We have a large number of fantastic volunteers who have been working hard and it is starting to come together. I and several others in the church will be having numerous conversations with individuals, small groups and larger groups, answering questions and sharing the plan and vision of this effort.

I'm putting some finishing touches on the sermon series that will kick off on the weekend of August 25,26. I'm really excited to get this series started and I believe we are going to see God do some amazing things in the coming weeks... Hold on tight FFC this is going to be some ride!

So You Think You're A Friend

I don't really have much time to blog this evening. James Pinkerton - Youth Pastor extraordinaire - i s coming over to watch the season finale of "So You Think You Can Dance". James and Tonya don't have satellite or cable hooked up yet, and it would be a sin for him to miss this show ;-)

I hate to sound prideful, but, you know I'm a good friend if I'll watch "So You Think You Can Dance" with you. I'm not really into the show but I get a kick out of listening to James critique each performer :-)

Maybe You're too Strong

I've started re-reading Jim Cymbala's book, "Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire". In the first chapter Jim discusses the challenges of his first pastorate at the fledgling Brooklyn Tabernacle. There was only a handful of people, barely enough money to pay the church's mortgage, and a lack of passion. One Sunday evening, while preaching, Jim was so depressed he just broke down crying during the message. Unable to go on he invited those in attendance to come to the altar and pray. While praying the congregation experienced the presence of God and their first spiritual breakthrough.

Jim writes, "That evening, when I was at my lowest, confounded by obstacles, bewildered by the darkness that surrounded us, unable even to continue preaching, I discovered an astonishing truth: God is attracted to weakness. He can't resist those who humbly and honestly admit how desperately they need him. Our weakness, in fact, makes room for his power."

Could it be that perhaps you're too strong? I know all too often I put on a "brave face" rather than being honest about my weakness. Maybe it's time that we stop posing and simply be human and allow God to work through our frailty.

2 Corinthians 12:9, "But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."

Baggage of Guilt

This weekend in church we are going to be concluding our series called "Baggage". This week we are diving into the topic of guilt. Guilt is debilitating in our lives and it is something that all of us must wrestle with.

The truth is none of us are faultless. We all have sins, we've all made mistakes. So we all have regrets. As a result we carry guilt around. We may deny the guilt. We may blame other people for our guilt. We may excuse our guilt. But we still feel the effects of it. If you're really going to move through life without baggage, you've got to learn how to let go of guilt.

The process of dropping the baggage of guilt involves: identifying our sin, accepting responsibility for our faults, asking for the Lord's forgiveness, and confessing our faults to another person.

"If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:8,9

"Admit your faults, to one another and pray for each other so that you may be healed." James 5:16

Life is too short to live it burdened by the baggage of guilt. God has given us the remedy for the baggage - how about you let go of it.

Here's the Scoop

Here's the BIG news that I've been wanting to share on my blog for several months now... our church is going to build again! We are going to do a major remodel on some of our current structure and add more space. In order to accomplish this task we are going to begin a campaign that we are calling, "Building to Bless - Another Generation". The remodeled and added structures will give us much needed space to provide ministries for our children and youth ministries. This addition will effect several ministries within the church: nursery, Little KidZone, Big KidZone, and the Youth Group. Added office space will be made, an Outreach Center will be constructed as well as a multipurpose space for meals and activities such as basketball and volleyball. (Maybe a little dodgeball too :-)

Beyond raising dollars and adding on space this will be a spiritual journey for our congregation and we will all grow as our faith is stretched and as we watch God do some amazing things among us. I'm excited that the leadership of the church has the vision to not be content or complacent and will step out in faith and attempt big things for God. I truly believe that adding this space at this time will position our congregation in such a way to minister to more people and see lives changed by the power of Jesus Christ - which is what this is all about ... this should be an awesome ride!

BIG News

Funeral Message

This morning I had the privilege of speaking at the funeral of a 97 year old veteran. I should have kept track of how many funerals I've performed in my ministry - I have no idea how many I've done now. One thing I've done over the years is collected stories to share at funerals. I didn't share this particular message this morning, but I want to share this story with you. (I'm not sure where I got this story, so I apologize, I can't give credit to the author)... it's kind of long but I love the message it presents:

The cheerful girl with bouncy golden curls was almost five. Waiting with her mother at the checkout stand, she saw them: a circle of glistening white pearls in a pink foil box.
"Oh please, Mommy. Can I have them? Please, Mommy, please?" Quickly the mother checked the back of the little foil box and then looked back into the pleading blue eyes of her little girl’s upturned face.

"A dollar ninety-five. That’s almost $2.00. If you really want them, I’ll think of some extra chores for you and in no time you can save enough money to buy them for yourself. Your birthday’s only a week away and you might get another crisp dollar bill from Grandma."
As soon as Jenny got home, she emptied her penny bank and counted out 17 pennies. After dinner, she did more than her share of chores and she went to the neighbor and asked Mrs McJames if she could pick dandelions for ten cents.

On her birthday, Grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at last she had enough money to buy the necklace.

Jenny loved her pearls. They made her feel dressed up and grown up. She wore them everywhere – Sunday school, kindergarten, even to bed. The only time she took them off was when she went swimming or had a bubble bath. Mother said if they got wet, they might turn her neck green.

Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night when he finished the story, he asked Jenny, "Do you love me?" "Oh yes, Daddy. You know that I love you." "Then give me your pearls." "Oh, Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have Princess - the white horse from my collection. The one with the pink tail. Remember, Daddy? The one you gave me. She’s my favorite." "That’s okay, Honey. Daddy loves you. Good night." And he brushed her cheek with a kiss.

About a week later, after the story time, Jenny’s daddy asked again, "Do you love me?" "Daddy, you know I love you." "Then give me your pearls." "Oh Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have my baby doll. The brand new one I got for my birthday. She is so beautiful and you can have the yellow blanket that matches her sleeper." "That’s okay. Sleep well. God bless you, little one. Daddy loves you" And as always, he brushed her cheek with a gentle kiss.

A few nights later when her daddy came in, Jenny was sitting on her bed. As he came close, he noticed her chin was trembling and one silent tear rolled down her cheek. "What is it, Jenny? What’s the matter?" Jenny didn’t say anything but lifted her little hand up to her daddy. And when she opened it, there was her little pearl necklace. With a little quiver, she finally said, "Here, Daddy. It’s for you." With tears gathering in his own eyes, Jenny’s kind daddy reached out with one hand to take the dime-store necklace, and with the other hand he reached into his pocket and pulled out a blue velvet case with a strand of genuine pearls and gave them to Jenny. He had them all the time. He was just waiting for her to give up the dime-store stuff so he could give her the genuine treasure.

Our Heavenly Father is waiting for us to give up the cheap things in our lives so that he can give us beautiful treasure. This physical life is a cheap imitation of what lies beyond the veil of death. We have a loving Heavenly Father with good gifts in His hands, and one of the best gifts is that of eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Seeking God

God wants to reveal Himself to you. He seeks you by the power of His Spirit and the moment you step toward Him - whatever way you do and you seek Him… He will reveal Himself to you. He wants to be found.

I remember reading "God Chasers" by Tommy Tenney in which he tells about how when he and his little girl play hide and seek he would always leave his foot sticking out just enough so that she could find him. That’s what God is like He will pull back just enough so that you must seek Him, but when you seek He promises that you can find Him.

He wants you to seek Him and when you do He will reveal the depths of His heart, His character, His glory, and His nature in ways you couldn't even imagine. Even if you have walked with Him and have known Him for 60 years you have yet to experience the depth of His majesty and glory.

Jeremiah 29:13,14, “you will seek me and you will find me when you seek me with all of your heart. I will be found by you declares the Lord.”

Interesting Evening

We had a very interesting evening around here tonight. James and Tonya Pinkerton were expecting their moving van, with all of their possessions to make it into Farmland this evening. James had called the movers that were driving the van several times today and they were scheduled to arrive at 4:00 p.m. However, their moving van was involved in an accident on the interstate. That was completely unexpected. (As far as we know everyone was safe) James can't believe his bad luck - first the truck is 2 days late and now the truck is involved in an accident.

Meanwhile, in Farmland, the church was struck by lightning. The lightning blew out our sound system, an LCD projector, and an air conditioner. Hopefully we can get everything back on line before services this weekend. Never a dull moment here in East Central Indiana :-)

Baggage of Hardship

This Sunday Pastor Jeff will be helping me out with the message; we will be talking about the baggage of "hardship". If there is anyone I know who has experienced hardship it is Jeff and Mindy Pfohl. They are a great example of keeping their faith in the midst of difficulties.

Let me tell you now; if you are going to be there this Sunday you will need to bring kleenex with you. This will be one of the most moving messages that we have done all year... consider yourself warned ;-)

It's Going to be Hot Tomorrow!

It was hot today in Parker City, Indiana! It is going to be hot tomorrow too. In fact it will be hotter than Hell tomorrow... Hell, Michigan that is. We are on track to be at least 4 degrees hotter than Hell tomorrow. I'm really not looking forward to that.

Our God is an Awesome God

This morning after our 10:30 worship service let out a young lady asked if she could talk to me for a moment. We stepped to a quit corner of the hallway and she proceeded to tell me that she had been out of church for a long time now and had decided to give church another shot. Before she came to church this morning she told God that if He really wanted her to come back to church and that this was the church for her she wanted to hear her favorite song, "Our God is an Awesome God".

Just before service started, our guest lead singer, Nick, asked me if it would be OK if the media team would play a little video that he had put together to kick off the first song set; I reviewed the video and said, "sure". Well, you guessed it, the background music to that video was "Our God is an Awesome God." Neither Nick, myself, nor the media team had any idea that God was about to use a seemingly insignificant decision to bless a life. After hearing that song toward the beginning of service God had the attention of this young lady and she realizes how important she is to Him.

Some people will say that this is a coincidence; I choose to believe that God listens to heart felt, sincere prayers and longs to reveal His love to us in big ways and in small ways.

Forgiveness

Tonight at church a portion of the message dealt with forgiving those who have hurt us. After the service I had a young man come up to me and tell me that meant so much to him and he was able to forgive those who had hurt him. He looked so free when I was talking to him, and it blessed me to see that God had ministered to this young man. Moments like that keep me going!

Facebook

At the prompting of our new Children's and Youth Pastor's (James and Tonya Pinkerton) I've jumped into the waters of Facebook. I'm still learning the ropes but it looks like it will be an interesting way to keep up on some friends and their lives.

If you have a Facebook account send me an invitation to be your friend... I could really use more friends, because at the present moment I only have 4 friends... I'm kind of a loser ;-). If you haven't applied for a Facebook account yet; set one up - search for "Kris Sorensen" - and then click "add to friends".

VBS

Tonight I spent a little time helping out with our Vacation Bible School at church (Take the Plunge). I was privileged to spend a couple of hours being a "crew leader" of a handful of students. I didn't impart any fantastic, earth shattering wisdom to these young ones tonight. But I did have a good time just being silly with them and showing them that a Christian adult can smile, fun, and enjoy themselves.

I've met my fair share of Christians who look like they have been baptized in lemon juice. They are so sour - no one would want the kind of faith they have. When I think about the people who have influenced me the most in my faith walk, it has been those individuals who have genuinely enjoyed life to the fullest. Jesus said, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." (1 John 10:10) I want to live life to the full.

Baggage

It seems like we acquire baggage as we go through life. People will verbally put us down and we pick up emotional baggage those that we may consider friends betray our trust and we pick up some relational baggage, some people have spiritual baggage and have problems with the Church or with God Himself. Some people are hooked on something and don't think that they will ever break free from the baggage of addiction. In this broken and sinful world many of us pick up baggage along the journey and it gets difficult to do life according to God's principles.
Ultimately, the choice is ours. Either we continue to carry the baggage, or at some point we say, “God, You have got to take it all.”
For the next few weeks at church we are going to talk about the baggage that we have acquired and how to let it go. I'm looking forward to seeing people drop their baggage and walk in freedom.
