Among the things that I will be sharing in my message at Dewart Lake Friends Church are these thoughts from Erwin McManus’ book An Unstoppable Force.
The formula for momentum is P=MV2 .
P = momentum
M = mass
V = velocity
In the church mass = people; without people there is no momentum.
Mass is threatening to some – some believe that smaller is always better. Some people want the church to stay small. It’s true that bigger is not always better. The size of the mass does not always provide momentum. God knows that mass doesn’t equal momentum – In Judges 7 Gideon was concerned about mass but God was focused on momentum.
God also doesn’t believe that big is bad. Gen. 15, “Look up at the heavens and count the stars – if indeed you can count them, so shall your offspring be.”
Without mass you have no movement; but if there’s no velocity, there is no momentum either.
Velocity = vision and mission. When people are moving together with a common purpose and vision momentum can happen. Without a vision and a mission you’ve just got a bunch of people You can have a stadium full of people at the Colts game but they aren’t going anywhere. You need both mass and velocity for momentum. If you are missing mass or velocity you get 0 (nothing).
When the church has a vision and is moving on mission with God then you have momentum. It is mission and vision (Velocity) that provides the momentum of a thriving church.
