Stuck in the Routine

The other day I read this blog by Seth Godin. Seth wrote, “The web has billions of pages. You'll see so few of them over your lifetime that the percentage is almost unmeasurable. Your web, on the other hand, is well-traveled and familiar to you. It's the one you travel daily.”

I got to thinking about the web I travel; it does get a bit routine. I visit the same basic sites month after month. I was thinking this evening how routine my life gets as well. I eat at the same restaurants, I shop at the same store, I cook the same meals, I travel the same way to work, I watch the same shows, etc. Some routine in our lives is good, but to get the most out of life I think I should mix it up a little bit. Life is a collection of experiences and if I eat at the same restaurants, speak to the same people, travel to the same locations then my world and my experiences shrink.

So, here’s what I’m thinking about doing. At this point I’m just thinking out loud, please don’t hold me to it just yet. I’m thinking about being purposeful about doing something new/different each day for one month. I embrace change so this shouldn’t be too much of a stretch for me; it will just be a matter of thinking through what new things to try each day. What do you think? Have you ever tried anything like this? What new things would you suggest I try?

  1. Last time Jme and I went to Gulf Shores, we made it our goal to do something new (or at least something we hadn't done in years)every day. We ate alligator tail, went parasailing, built sand castles, watched a boat race... I don't remember what else we did, but it was nice to break the routine. I like your idea.

  2. I tried something new yesterday, I tried not being negative and for the most part it worked fine and it was a good day. I kind of blew around 5:00 when I had a conversation with a family member about some issues. And today I'm going for the whole day. I tried country music once but I couldn't recognize the country it was from so I gave up ;}.
