Theological Term Of The Day

Trichotomy

The teaching that the human consists of three parts: body, soul, and spirit. As opposed to "Dichotomy" which states that a human consists of body and soul. With dichotomy the soul is also referred to as the "spirit".

Scripture reference to both the soul and spirit:

Hebrews 4:12, "For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

1 Thessalonians 5:23, "May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

In case you were wondering, I'm a trichotomist, however, if I get to heaven and find out that my soul and spirit were one and the same I won't be too upset.
