I'm going to begin a series of posts on what motivates people to come to church?
I’ve been in “the church” and “behind the scenes” now for 37 years and I’ve seen a wide variety of people completely miss the reason that the church exists. I’ve seen people who have used and abused the church and miss out on the blessings of truly being a part of the Body of Christ. Here are just a few of some of the reasons that motivate some people to go to church...
I want something from God. I’ve had people say to me, “Why didn’t God answer my prayer? I’m a good person, I go to church.” They question God like He is unfair because they had “put in their time” at church and now He owes them. Church becomes a place of cosmic manipulation, as if we could coerce God to do our bidding. Rarely will people own up to this motivation.
Habit/Tradition. Don’t get me wrong this is a good habit to have. But simply attending church out of habit misses the point of being there. Attending church is deeper than, “I show up because that’s what I’ve always done.”
To get to heaven. God doesn’t have a gold star attendance sheet in heaven and you need a certain number of church visits to get into heaven.
More to come...
