Below is part of a larger list that I'm compiling of reasons that I've seen some people attend church. These folks may be coming to church but their motivation is skewed.
I need money for my bills. I love helping people in our community, I love giving a hand up, I love it when we as a church care for those who are a part of our own fellowship; but what I hate is when someone bleeds the church of their resources and when the well has run dry they run for the door.
My parents/grandparents went to this church. These individuals go to church to make the patriarch or matriarch of the family happy. We would hate to disappoint Grandma so we go to church out of duty.
This is my denomination. These folks could care less about the particular people that they are gathering with, they are more interested in the name over the door.
I like the sermons/music/children’s programs/etc… Personal preference plays a large role in finding a church that we can commit to, but what I have seen is people hopping from church to church with a consumer mindset. Their motivation is consistently, “What can you give me? If there isn’t a church that can give me what I want, then I’m not going.”
I need votes/I’ve got something to sell. I’m always amazed when people want to get very involved in the life of the church and as soon as they see an opening they’ve got something to sell the church or to begin the process of using the directory as their personal sales database. I’ve told people, “No” to what they were selling and they never came back.
More to come...
