Risk

I’m sure I’ve noticed this before but it really caught my attention in a new way the other day. The word “risk” is in my name… I know, I know it sounds Junior ‘Highish’; but if you move the letter ‘k’ in “risk” to the beginning of the word you get “Kris”. Risk isn’t my middle name, it’s my first name.

I’ve got to admit though; sometimes I don’t live like that. Sometimes I play it safe, sometimes I want the convenient and the comfortable. But then there are other times the “risk” in me just wants to come screaming out and it’s usually screaming “LIVE”, “CHALLENGE”, “CHANGE”, “EXPERIENCE”.

I found some encouraging words this week from Mark Batterson’s book “In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day.” Here are some of the things I underlined:

“God loves impossible odds… One of the most exhilarating things in the world is doing something that no one thinks you can do… What’s the point of doing something that someone already thinks you can do...? Too often our prayers revolve around asking God to reduce the odds in our lives. We want everything in our favor. But maybe God wants to stack the odds against us so we can experience a miracle of divine proportions.”

I’d get bored with life if everything was easy. Even though I don’t always like problems or difficulties, give me a challenge, tell me I can’t do something, put a goal or problem in front me so big that after it’s accomplished we have to say “only God”.

Where have you grown comfortable? What looks so risky in your life that if it were accomplished others would just shake their heads in disbelief and say “Only God”?

  1. Very thought provoking...thanks for sharing that. It made me stop and think what is risk? I've taken a few in my life and have learned that it sure isn't easy.
